{"id":500790,"date":"2022-03-23T11:06:57","date_gmt":"2022-03-23T18:06:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=500790"},"modified":"2022-03-23T11:06:57","modified_gmt":"2022-03-23T18:06:57","slug":"post-office-honor-for-charles-jackson-french-passes-hurdle-with-sasse-support","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/post-office-honor-for-charles-jackson-french-passes-hurdle-with-sasse-support\/","title":{"rendered":"Post Office Honor for Charles Jackson French Passes Hurdle with Sasse Support"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Post Office Honor for Charles Jackson French Passes Hurdle with Sasse Support<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>United States Senator <strong>Ben Sasse<\/strong> has offered the support needed for a bill to rename a post office for World War II hero <strong>Charles Jackson French<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The senator from Nebraska on Monday, the day before the deadline, <a href=\"https:\/\/nebraskaexaminer.com\/2022\/03\/21\/sasse-sends-11th-hour-letter-to-get-wwii-hero-french-into-post-office-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote a letter of support to a bill<\/a> before the Senate Homeland Security and General Affairs Committee. The bill, H.R. 4168, would rename a post office in French\u2019s native Omaha in his honor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPetty Officer 1st Class Charles Jackson French is an American hero,\u201d Sasse wrote in the letter. \u201cShould the Committee consider and favorably report H.R. 4168, I intend to support it if it is presented to the full Senate, including by supporting unanimous consent requests to expedite its consideration as needed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>French served in the Navy in World War II. During the battle of Guadalcanal in 1942, the ship on which French was serving as a mess attendant, the U.S.S. Gregory, was sunk by Japanese forces. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/black-history-month-the-story-of-charles-jackson-french-a-hero-for-our-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">French saved the lives of 15 sailors by swimming them to safety through shark-infested waters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Honors for French, who died in 1956, have been delayed. But the post office honors and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/navy-swimming-hero-charles-jackson-french-to-have-pool-named-in-his-honor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the naming of a Naval training pool in San Diego<\/a>, where French lived later in life, in his honor are among the delayed recognition for his heroism. The post office that would bear his name sits at 63rd and Maple Streets in the Benson neighborhood of Omaha.<\/p>\n<p>The drive to name the post office for French was led by Sen. <strong>Deb Fischer<\/strong> and Rep. <strong>Don Bacon,<\/strong> the latter of whom is a retired Air Force brigadier general. Bacon\u2019s House bill was co-sponsored by Reps. <strong>Jeff Fortenberry<\/strong> and <strong>Adrian Smith.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m hoping Ben will decide to support,\u201d Bacon <a href=\"https:\/\/nebraskaexaminer.com\/2022\/03\/20\/sasse-has-tuesday-deadline-to-get-post-office-named-for-omaha-wwii-hero\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told the <em>Nebraska Examiner<\/em> last week<\/a>. \u201cIt is right for Omaha and the French family. It is important to remember our legacy and honor our heroes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The effort required a largely perfunctory signoff from Sasse, since the rest of the state\u2019s congressional delegation was on board.
