{"id":500775,"date":"2022-03-23T03:27:08","date_gmt":"2022-03-23T10:27:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=500775"},"modified":"2022-03-23T05:33:22","modified_gmt":"2022-03-23T12:33:22","slug":"sebastian-coe-integrity-and-future-of-womens-sport-at-stake-in-transgender-debate-calls-on-ioc-to-make-decisions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/sebastian-coe-integrity-and-future-of-womens-sport-at-stake-in-transgender-debate-calls-on-ioc-to-make-decisions\/","title":{"rendered":"Sebastian Coe: &#8216;Integrity and Future of Women&#8217;s Sport&#8217; at Stake in Transgender Debate; Urges IOC to Make Decisions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>World Athletics President <strong>Sebastian Coe<\/strong> is speaking out about the transgender athlete debate, following the NCAA victory of <strong>Lia Thomas<\/strong>.\u00a0Thomas, a transgender swimmer at Penn, won the 500-yard freestyle at the NCAA Women\u2019s Division I Championships last week in Atlanta.<\/p>\n<p>Coe told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2022\/mar\/21\/coe-warns-transgender-athletes-pose-risk-to-integrity-of-womens-sport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Guardian<\/a> that the \u201cintegrity and future of women\u2019s sport\u201d is at stake as the debate continues, calling on the International Olympic Committee to introduce regulations that can be applied standard across every sport and insisted that \u201cgender cannot trump biology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that the integrity of women\u2019s sport \u2013 if we don\u2019t get this right \u2013 and actually the future of women\u2019s sport, is very fragile,\u201d Sebastian Coe told The Guardian.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas formerly competed as a member of Penn\u2019s men\u2019s squad for three years, before transitioning to a woman during the COVID-19 pandemic. At the beginning of the 2021-22 season, Thomas started to compete for the Penn women\u2019s team, having met the NCAA\u2019s transgender-participation condition of one year of hormone-suppressant therapy. That requirement, which was based on outdated science, has since been changed. The NCAA initially indicated it would follow USA Swimming guidelines for transgender inclusion, but when the governing body for the sport in the United States announced stringent parameters, the NCAA changed its mind again.<\/p>\n<p>According to the report, World Athletics has introduced strict rules for transgender athletes involving testosterone levels.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no question to me that testosterone is the key determinant in performance,\u201d Sebastian Coe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/athletics\/2022\/03\/21\/seb-coe-warns-future-womens-sport-stake-transgender-athletes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told the Daily Telegraph<\/a>. \u201cIf you look at the nature of 12\u2013 or 13-year-old girls, I remember my daughters would regularly outrun male counterparts in their class, but as soon as puberty kicks in that gap opens and it remains. He added: \u201cGender cannot trump biology. As a federation president, I do not have that luxury. It is a luxury that other organizations not at the practical end of having to deal with these issues have.
