MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota, February 20. AFTER trailing the Hoosiers by two points after day one at the Big Ten Women’s Championships, the host Minnesota Golden Gophers put together a powerful day of scoring en route to a 47-point lead over Indiana.<\/p>\n

After day two, Minnesota stood on top with 258 points, while Indiana held second with 211 points. Penn State, starting to make its presence known in the conference after previously owning the conference a decade ago, stands third with 157 points. Ohio State (151) and Wisconsin (144) finished the day in fourth and fifth.<\/p>\n

Purdue (138), Michigan (131), Nebraska (81), Iowa (81), Michigan State (47), Northwestern (45) and Illinois (36) are also competing at the championship meet.<\/p>\n

The night began with the second of three 21-second 50 frees from Wisconsin’s Ivy Martin today as she clocked a 21.69 to lead Wisconsin’s team of Martin, Chase Kinney (22.08), Aja Van Hout (22.19) and Emma Paulson (22.79) to an NCAA A cut and winning time of 1:28.75 in the 200-yard free relay. During prelims, Martin crushed her Big Ten record with a 21.58 to qualify first in the 50-yard free individual event. Previously, Martin had clocked a pair of 21.84s to set the mark. Martin closed her night with another 21.68 to capture the Big Ten title in the splash-and-dash.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Minnesota’s Rebecca Weiland, Blake Zeiger, Erin Caflisch and Tess Behrens checked in second in the relay with an NCAA A cut 1:28.68, while Indiana’s Kait Flederbach, Stephanie Armstrong, Brooklynn Snodgrass and Cynthia Pammett also nabbed an A cut with a third-plcae time of 1:29.49. Penn State also got into the A cut game with a fourth-place 1:29.51 from Alyson Ackman, Carolyn Fittin, Katelyn Miller and Kaitlin Saloky.<\/p>\n

Weiland took another runner-up finish behind Martin with a 22.27 in the 50-yard free, while Ohio State’s Michelle Williams clocked in third in 22.46.<\/p>\n

In between, there was plenty of other fast swims to be had in Minneapolis. Indiana’s Lindsay Vrooman won the 500-yard free by more than a second with a 4:36.91. That’s just a second-and-a-half off her Big Ten record of 4:35.41 from a year ago, but enough to lock her into NCAAs with an A cut. Minnesota’s Samantha Harding (4:38.06) and Ohio State’s Alexandra Norris (4:39.88) wound up second and third in the middle-distance event.<\/p>\n

Ohio State jumped into the win column in the women’s 200-yard IM with a 1:56.91, while Michigan went 2-3 with Marni Oldershaw (1:57.11) and Courtney Beidler (1:57.21) battling each other throughout the race.<\/p>\n

One-meter diving closed the night with Purdue’s Casey Matthews leading a Boilermaker points bonanza with a first-place tally of 351.25. Mary Dunnichay (333.10), MacKenzie Tweardy (329.90) and Michelle Cabassol (324.65) finished third through fifth for Purdue with Minnesota’s Maggie Keefer taking second in 339.05.<\/p>\n
