THE Nova Southeastern men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s swimming and diving squads swam to early leads in the team standings Wednesday night at the Sunshine State Conference Championships in Orlando. Nova Southeastern did not win a single event on Wednesday, but their depth led them to a three-point lead over Tampa in the women&#8217;s meet and four-point lead over Florida Southern on the men&#8217;s side.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sunshine State Conference Press Release<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With the first day of the 2014 Sunshine State Conference Swimming Championships in the books at the Orlando YMCA Aquatic Center, both the Nova Southeastern men\u2019s and women\u2019s teams lead the team standings.<\/p>\n<p>Through the first four events the women\u2019s standings are as follows: 1. Nova Southeastern (87 points), 2. Tampa (84 points), 3. Florida Southern (70 points), 4. Florida Tech (52 points), 5. Rollins (50 points), 6. Saint Leo (47 points), 7. Lynn (41 points).<\/p>\n<p>Through the first four events the men\u2019s standings are as follows: 1. Nova Southeastern (99 points), 2. Florida Southern (95 points), 3. Tampa (87 points), 4. Florida Tech (58 points), 5. Rollins (38 points), 6. Saint Leo (36 points).<\/p>\n<p>Two final events, including the 1,000-yard freestyle and the 800-yard freestyle relay, took place on the opening day of the conference championship.<\/p>\n<p>On the women\u2019s side it was Saint Leo\u2019s Stephanie Martinez taking gold in a time of 10:14.55. Martinez\u2019 time was good enough for an NCAA provisional qualifying time. The women\u2019s 1,000 freestyle saw the top nine finisher earn NCAA provisional times, under 10:33.10.<\/p>\n<p>Lynn\u2019s Thalie Carmigniani took silver in a time of 10:19.25, while Nova Southeastern\u2019s Sara Akoubian took bronze in a time of 10:21.63.<\/p>\n<p>The top six finishers in the men\u2019s 1,000-yeard freestyle earned NCAA provisional qualifying times, under 9:35.79. Florida Southern\u2019s Juan Tolosa took gold in a time of 9:13. 43, while his teammate Franco Lupoli won silver in a time of 9:14.46. Nova Southeastern\u2019s Florian Mehlan took bronze in a time of 9:22.89.<\/p>\n<p>The women\u2019s 800-yard freestyle relay saw all three medal-winning teams earn NCAA provisional times, under 7:48.48. Tampa\u2019s team of Alexandra Hipolito, Briana Murphy, Erin Plachy and Heather Glenday won gold in a time of 7:28.67 in an exciting finish. Florida Southern\u2019s Ali Crenshaw, Lauren Reynolds, Cassie Ley and Heather Burns finished a finger-length behind for silver in a time of 7:28.85. Nova Southeastern\u2019s Emma Lawrenz, Brooke Munion, Emma Wahlstrom and Lauren Chapple took bronze in a time of 7:36.65.<\/p>\n<p>The men\u2019s 800-yard freestyle relay also saw an exciting finish for first place. Florida Southern\u2019s Luis Rojas, Allan Gutierrez, Lupoli and Jesus Marin took gold by three tenths of a second with a time of 6:34. 22. Their time was less than a second off the current SSC Championship record and a NCAA automatic qualifier.<\/p>\n<p>Tampa\u2019s Damen Phieffer, Martin Hammer, Jeremy Parker and Runar Borgen took silver with a time of 6:34.57.
