{"id":500277,"date":"2022-03-19T07:31:51","date_gmt":"2022-03-19T14:31:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=500277"},"modified":"2022-03-19T08:40:57","modified_gmt":"2022-03-19T15:40:57","slug":"ncaa-womens-championships-transgender-man-iszac-henig-qualifies-for-100-freestyle-final","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ncaa-womens-championships-transgender-man-iszac-henig-qualifies-for-100-freestyle-final\/","title":{"rendered":"NCAA Women&#8217;s Championships: Transgender Man Iszac Henig Qualifies for 100 Freestyle Final"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>NCAA Women&#8217;s Championships: Transgender Man Iszac Henig Qualifies for 100 Freestyle Final<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/as-big-names-miss-out-gretchen-walsh-grabs-top-seed-in-100-freestyle-lia-thomas-advances\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an eventful 100 freestyle prelims at the NCAA Women&#8217;s Championships<\/a>, the eighth and final qualifier for the championship final was Yale&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Iszac Henig<\/strong>, who posted a time of 47.55. Henig is a transgender male, but he remains eligible to compete on the Yale women&#8217;s team with relatively little controversy because he has not undergone any procedures that would enhance testosterone.<\/p>\n<p>Henig identifies as male, but that choice does not affect his participation in women&#8217;s competition. If he were to begin any hormone therapy as part of his transition, he would no longer be able to compete in women&#8217;s events, although he would be allowed in men&#8217;s competition.<\/p>\n<p>The 100 free is Henig&#8217;s second scoring swim of the week after he placed 16th in the 50 free, and he also took 42nd in the 100 fly Friday. Earlier this season, Henig won the Ivy League title in the 50 free while also finishing second to <strong>Lia Thomas<\/strong> in the 100 free and taking third in the 100 fly.<\/p>\n<p>Henig is one of two transgender athletes to qualify for the 100 free final, joining fellow Ivy Leaguer Thomas, whose presence as a transgender female at the NCAA Championships has been controversial. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ncaa-title-for-lia-thomas-is-joke-with-biological-women-as-punchline-hardly-a-laughing-matter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thomas won the 500 free national title<\/a> earlier in the week and finished tied for fifth in the 200 free.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a
