TEMPE, Arizona, Feb. 17. THE final night of competition at the 2003 Lost Dutchman Invitational produced another Misty Hyman win but also produced her first loss.<\/p>\n
Misty (AFOX) opened the night with a win in her butterfly specialty, this time at 100 yards in 55.08 seconds. Second was Kalyn Keller, Sun Devil Aquatics, at 55.95 with Ida Mattsen, SDA, third at 56.73. <\/p>\n
These were the main players again a few events later in the 200 individual medley. <\/p>\n
Mattsen broke the meet record of US Olympian B.J. Bedford in the prelims at 2:04.16, with Misty second at 2:06.00. In the finals, Misty had a small lead after the butterfly, which she maintained through backstroke, but Mattsen put on pressure during the breaststroke and led by half a body length going into the freestyle. Misty is a great freestyler but at this early stage of her comeback from layoff and shoulder surgery, she was unable to catch Mattsen, who touched at 2:02.90, and was run down herself by a great closing rush from Keller who finished at 2:04.62 to Misty's 2:04.83. <\/p>\n
Mattsen, 17, a Swede here to train with Coach John Pontz and his Sun Devil club squad, is world class in the 200 meter freestyle at 2:01, showing why it would be tough for Misty to catch her. She also benefits in the IM from a bit of mentoring from former ASU star Attila Czene who knows the 200 individual medley well, having won the event at the l996 Atlanta Olympics and having been in the top four in it in three Olympic Games . He also won the event for ASU at the 2000 NCAA meet, where he tied the short course meters world record.<\/p>\n
Caitlin Connealy, AFOX, defeated her teammate Skye Elbert, 23.84 to 24.06 at 50 yards freestyle in a battle of the 5A Arizona High School record holder (Connealy) against the reigning 4A champion (Elbert). In the men's version, Scott Von Schoff, SDA, an American World University Games star, had his third win of the weekend at 20.80.<\/p>\n
Multiple winners prevailed in several events. Graham Lentz, Twin Valley Aquatics, added the 200 breaststroke to his 100 title at 2:09.82. USC-bound Sam Masson of Boise Y completed his sweep of both butterflys and both backstrokes by winning the 100 fly in 50.63. <\/p>\n
Mission Viejo won the men's team title with Sun Devil winning both the women's and the combined team titles.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
