DESPITE being an underdog going into the season, Carmel won the 29th Annual IHSAA Girls Swimming & Diving State Finals, Friday and Saturday, February 14-15, 2003 at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis.

Though the Greyhounds trailed by three points heading into the second to last event — the 100 yard breaststroke — the fact that the leader, North Central of Indianapolis, didn't have a participant in the event proved to be a deciding factor. Carmel on the other hand had two individuals, one each in the championship and consolation heats. Erin Sparks and Meaghann Fisher combined for 27 points in the event, one that Sparks would claim honors in, and Carmel would go on to claim its 17th consecutive state championship, which continues to be the longest streak in IHSAA sports history and the longest current high school streak in the USA.

Carmel competed against the toughest schedule in the country this year as they raced the top teams in Indiana and the defending Kentucky and Ohio state champion teams. The IHSAA State meet was the eighth time Carmel rallied from behind this season to pull out a victory late in a meet.

Carmel, coached by Ken Stopkotte, finished with 277 points followed by North Central with 259, the fourth year in a row the Panthers finished in the number two spot. Munster finished third with 207 points, Columbus North was fourth with 199 and Hamilton Southeastern was fifth at 177.

Stopkotte continues to have a perfect record in Indiana as his Carmel women's and men's teams have won five state titles in his three years with the Greyhounds. The Carmel men are heavily favored to add a sixth title in two weeks.

The Greyhounds grabbed the lead right off the bat, winning the 200 medley relay in 1:47.27. It was the 16th time in the last 17 years Carmel had won the opening event. Helping their cause were second place finishes to North Central in the other two relay events. The two neighboring schools combined to win seven of the 12 events during the day.

Two records fell during the meet, including the oldest mark on the chart.

North Central senior Julie Broms scored 477.00 points in winning the one meter diving competition and bettered the long-standing mark of 473.30 set by Dana Wiegand of Franklin back in 1982. Last year's champion, Kari Retrum of Hamilton Southeastern, placed second with 459.05 points.

South Dearborn senior Katie Robinson set the other record in the 100 butterfly. Robinson touched in a time of 54.64 seconds, bettering her own mark of last year by .03 of a second. It was the third straight year she had won the event and set the record at the same time.

Robinson also defended her 50 freestyle crown from a year ago finishing first in 23.15, which was .08 faster than her winning time of last year.

In addition to Robinson, two other girls – North Central's Susan Hentschel and Columbus North's Leah Retrum — won two events apiece.

Retrum won the 500 freestyle for the fourth consecutive year, just the second individual to accomplish the feat in that event. Retrum clocked in just .05 of a second off her state meet record of last year in 4:46.13. Earlier in the meet, she won her third consecutive crown in the 200 individual medley in 2:01.50.

Hentschel, a senior, won perhaps the most exciting event of the day edging Carmel sophomore Taylor Baughman by .01 of a second at the wall in the 100 freestyle in 50.47. Earlier, Hentschel captured her second championship in three years in the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:50.33. Teammate Christine Shehorn finished third in 1:51.45 after the pair entered the event as the top two seeds following Friday's prelims.

Fort Wayne Snider senior Erin Morris also returned to win the 100 backstroke for the second straight year completing the course in 55.32.

Quotes
"That was a great way to start the meet. We came here ready to swim, and we just had an amazing day."
– Carmel Coach Ken Stopkotte on the team's winning 200 Medley Relay

"We've gotten closer every year and we obviously wanted to beat them, but our rivalry with them has been great. I'm disappointed we couldn't win, but my hats off to them. They are an outstanding program."
– North Central senior Susan Hentschel on their rivalry with Carmel

"I knew my entries were really important. I just wanted to be consistent and put things on auto-pilot."
– North Central senior diver Julie Broms on her state championship and record breaking performance

"I just told my girls to be careful in that final relay. We tried to give North Central a run in the 200 free, but they are the defending national champions in that race and they're tough to beat in those relays."
– Carmel Coach Ken Stopkotte on the 400 Free Relay

"I think the medley really helped us a lot, winning that at the start (of the meet). It got everyone excited," Gooch said. "It's just a really key thing to win the medley."
– Carmel senior and team captain Kiley Gooch

"It's been a lot of fun competing in this meet. I'm real happy with both my races today. This is a great way to end my high school career."
– South Dearborn senior Katie Robinson after winning the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award and breaking the state record in the 100 butterfly

"I'm just very happy, it's a big load off our backs. A lot of people don't understand the pressure these girls are under. It's more than just the pressure to swim fast and do your best, but it's the pressure to defend something that is so awesome that it began before most of them were even born. So there's just another big added element of pressure. I've been coaching on pool decks for 19 years and I've never been prouder of a team than this group. They have a tremendous amount of class, character and heart."
– Carmel Coach Ken Stopkotte on the team's championship win and the pressure to defend the title

"The past two years I got fourth and sixth, and just winning is so awesome. I've won on relays before but winning by yourself is just so exciting."
– Carmel Junior Erin Sparks after winning the 100 breaststroke

"It was a great meet. It was great for the state of Indiana. It was some great swimming. We're really pleased with our performance. We broke five school records and won five events. Obviously we would have liked to have 19 more points but it didn't happen. My hats are off to the Carmel coaching staff and the Carmel swimmers. They swam like champions. When someone's been a champion for that long you really have to have everything go right to knock them off and that didn't happen for us this year. But I'm really proud of our team and the way they raced and competed and like I said, the whole meet was great. There were so many great races throughout the entire meet like the freestyle relays and the 100-yard freestyle. But the senior girls from Carmel really stepped it up and did a great job."
– North Central coach Mark Hesse commenting on his team and this year's meet

"We have a good class that's coming back. We graduate great leaders off of our senior class, but we don't graduate a ton of seniors. We have a good healthy group coming back and some good freshman coming in next year. So we have a lot of talent, but when you look around the state and there are a lot of teams getting better. Plus, Indiana has the best club and high school coaches in the United States. It's always going to be very competitive. I was looking at the Munster team and it seemed like the whole team was freshmen so they're all going to be back next year and they were right behind North Central. So it will continue to be a battle next year."
– Carmel Coach Ken Stopkotte on his team's future

2003 Girls High School Indiana State Championship
2/14/03 to 2/15/03

2003 IHSAA Girl Swimming/Diving Championship

IUPUI Natatorium Feb 14 –
