{"id":499278,"date":"2022-03-10T11:32:51","date_gmt":"2022-03-10T18:32:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=499278"},"modified":"2022-03-10T11:32:51","modified_gmt":"2022-03-10T18:32:51","slug":"usa-water-polo-overwhelms-colombia-21-8-in-intercontinental-cup-play-in-peru","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/usa-water-polo-overwhelms-colombia-21-8-in-intercontinental-cup-play-in-peru\/","title":{"rendered":"USA Water Polo Overwhelms Colombia 21-8 in Intercontinental Cup Play in Peru"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>USA Water Polo Overwhelms Colombia 21-8 in Intercontinental Cup Play in Peru<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>By Luis Olaya<\/em><\/p>\n<p>With one-sided losses in his team\u2019s first two matches of the 2022 FINA International Cup\u2014by 21-5 to Brazil and 19-4 to Argentina\u2014Colombia men\u2019s assistant water polo coach <strong>Mario Ochoa<\/strong> knew that a match-up versus the undefeated American side was likely to be more learning experience than competitive contest.<\/p>\n<p>That Columbia was at the wrong end of a 21-8 decision proved Ochoa right\u2014though a strong second quarter demonstrated that his\u00a0team\u00a0is headed in the right direction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur objective was clear,\u201d the Colombian coach said after the match. \u201cEvery quarter was a new game for us, and we didn&#8217;t have to look at the scoreboard. In the second quarter we greatly improved the effectiveness of the passes and caused many exclusions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even with a reduced squad for this tournament\u2014the American men\u2019s squad includes Olympians <strong>Hannes Daube, Drew Holland, Ben Stevenson<\/strong> and <strong>Dylan Woodhead<\/strong> to Lima along with younger prospects for their 2024 Paris Olympics effort\u2014Team USA has been the class of both the men\u2019s and women\u2019s brackets. The American women, with <strong>Amanda Longan<\/strong>, the team&#8217;s sole representative from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, are also 3-0 in <a href=\"https:\/\/usawaterpolo.org\/news\/2022\/3\/9\/womens-senior-national-team-usa-women-best-brazil-for-third-straight-win-in-fina-intercontinental-cup.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">round-robin play after beating<\/a> Brazil 13-5 on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>In Wednesday\u2019s game against the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/young-brazilian-water-polo-squad-schooled-by-american-men-in-intercontinental-cup-play\/\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. men<\/a>, Colombia went down 1-0 in the first minute after a successful 5M penalty by <strong>Chase Dodd<\/strong>. Colombia\u2019s <strong>Nelson Bejarano<\/strong> tied the match at 1-all 45 seconds later, but the Americans then rattled off five of the next six goals to lead 6-2 after one quarter of play.<\/p>\n<p>In the second quarter, we saw the best Colombia play of the tournament. They attacked American goalie <strong>Adam Weinberg<\/strong> more effectively, using good passing to and set up better shots\u2014which landed. With four goals in the period\u2014C<strong>arlos Sanchez, Enzo Salinas, Felipe Mora<\/strong> and <strong>Daniel Bueno<\/strong> all connected\u2014the Colombians were cheered by a vocal crowd at Villa Deportiva Nacional. Even though they ended the quarter down 11-6, the Colombians fans encouragement was tireless. They knew that theirs was the weaker team but the fans in Videna recognized that their players gave their hearts in each attack.<\/p>\n<p>Weinberg, in his first appearance with the USA Water Polo senior squad, and his mates pitched a near shutout in the second half, allowing two goals late in the third period before blanking their opponent for the fourth. The USA counterattack\u2014led by <strong>Tyler Abramson<\/strong> and <strong>Evan Cain<\/strong> with four goals each\u2014was a lethal weapon that hurt a Colombia team victimized by its own impatience.<\/p>\n<p>In the end, their effort wasn&#8217;t enough, and the match ended in favor of the Americans. The United States was technically superior\u2014converting 61% (21 of 34) of its shots with 18 assists\u2014while the Colombians (34% on 8 of 23 shooting) had a difficult time finding enough space from the U.S. pressure to comfortably finish off their shots.<\/p>\n<p>Still, this learning experience is invaluable for a team seeking to improve its play against more accomplished rivals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cParticipating in this tournament is a great experience that will allow us to learn a lot to improve our polo, which is under development,\u201d Ochoa said about his team&#8217;s\u00a0appearance at the Intercontinental Cup. \u201cWe have few chances to face rivals of such a high level, so it was a good opportunity for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>USA Water Polo Goals: 21 (6, 5, 6, 4) T.
