Less than a month after setting an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/claire-curzan-breaks-100-butterfly-american-record-and-100-back-high-school-record-at-north-carolina-high-school-state-meet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American record in the 100-yard butterfly<\/a>, Curzan unleashed a pair of stellar performances during Friday night action at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaswimming.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USA Swimming<\/a> TYR Pro Series stop in Westmont, Illinois.<\/p>\n<p>Surrounded by a sizable cast of fellow American Olympians, Curzan opened her night with a personal-best mark of 2:07.31 in the 200-meter backstroke. That swim secured a two-second triumph over <strong>Olivia Smoliga<\/strong>, who touched in 2:09.35. Later in the session, Curzan turned in a 56.89 outing to prevail in the 100 butterfly, where <strong>Kelsi Dahlia<\/strong> was the runnerup in 57.53. Curzan has a best time of 56.20 in the 100 fly.<\/p>\n<p>A Stanford recruit, Curzan has the 100 backstroke and 50 freestyle on her schedule for the final day of the competition, and it wouldn\u2019t be surprising to see her threaten additional personal bests.<\/p>\n<p>While Curzan doubled to establish herself as the night\u2019s headliner, <strong>Michael Andrew<\/strong> came through with his second victory of the meet. A night after winning the 100 breaststroke, Andrew got to the wall first in a blanket finish in the 100 butterfly. Andrew\u2019s time of 51.74 narrowly edged the triumvirate of <strong>Shaine Casas<\/strong> (51.77), <strong>Caeleb Dressel<\/strong> (51.79) and Italian <strong>Federico Burdisso<\/strong> (51.97). Dressel is the reigning Olympic champion.<\/p>\n<p>Since the Olympic Games, Andrew had several subpar performances, so his strong swims in the TYR Series are positive signs ahead of selection for this summer\u2019s World Championships in Budapest. En route to his win in the 100 fly, Andrew pushed the pace from the start to build a comfortable margin, which none of his foes could make up.<\/p>\n<p>Casas was also second in the 200 backstroke, which was won by 2016 Olympic champion <strong>Ryan Murphy<\/strong>. The Team USA veteran clocked in at 1:56.78, with Casas touching in 1:58.09. They were the only two swimmers to break the two-minute barrier and will see one another again in the 100 backstroke.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hali Flickinger<\/strong> backed up her Day One win in the 200 butterfly with a comfortable triumph in the 400 individual medley.
