{"id":498687,"date":"2022-03-03T08:26:04","date_gmt":"2022-03-03T15:26:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=498687"},"modified":"2024-10-28T10:50:08","modified_gmt":"2024-10-28T17:50:08","slug":"russians-belarusians-out-of-paralympics-amid-boycott-risk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/russians-belarusians-out-of-paralympics-amid-boycott-risk\/","title":{"rendered":"Russians, Belarusians Out of Paralympics Amid Boycott Risk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-57 Component-p-0-2-48\">Faced with threats of withdrawals and growing animosity in the Athletes Village, organizers of the Winter Paralympics on Thursday reversed course and expelled athletes from Russia and Belarus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-57 Component-p-0-2-48\">The about-face came less than 24 hours after the <strong>International Paralympic Committee<\/strong> announced it would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paralympic.org\/press-release\/ipc-makes-decisions-regarding-rpc-and-npc-belarus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">allow Russians and Belarusians<\/a> to compete when the Games open on Friday, but only as neutral athletes with colors, flags and other national symbols removed because of the invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-57 Component-p-0-2-48\">The Paralympics in Beijing, which follow the Winter Olympics, close on March 13.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-57 Component-p-0-2-48\">\u201cThe war has now come to these Games and behind the scenes many governments are having an influence on our cherished event,\u201d IPC President <strong>Andrew Parsons<\/strong> said Thursday after announcing the ban. \u201cWe were trying to protect the Games from war.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-57 Component-p-0-2-48\">Parsons said the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paralympic.org\/beijing-2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IPC<\/a> underestimated the negative reaction to letting Russians and Belarusians compete \u2014 even as neutral athletes. The Athletes Village, which Parsons hoped would be a place of harmony, he now depicted as a tinderbox.<\/p>\n<p>From the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-sports-europe-beijing-paralympic-games-a711e5f037440e71468901ac35d1de31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement:<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"Component-dfp-0-2-52\">\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-57 Component-p-0-2-48\">\u201cWe don\u2019t have reports of any specific incidents of aggression or anything like that,\u201d Parsons said. \u201cBut it was a very, very volatile environment in the (Athletes) Village.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-57 Component-p-0-2-48\">\u201cIt was a very rapid escalation which we did not think was going to happen. We did not think that entire delegations, or even teams within delegations, will withdraw, will boycott, will not participate.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-57 Component-p-0-2-48\">The first instance came when Latvia said its curlers would refuse to play against the Russians in a scheduled group game.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-57 Component-p-0-2-48\">IPC spokesman <strong>Craig Spence<\/strong> described a stark change in just over 12 hours from athletes, administrators and politicians. He said the talk was \u201cnow we\u2019re thinking of going home. We\u2019re not playing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-57 Component-p-0-2-48\">\u201cThat threatens the viability of this event. So that\u2019s a huge change,\u201d Spence said. \u201dThe atmosphere in the Village is not pleasant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-57 Component-p-0-2-48\">Parsons said he expects legal action from the Russian and Belarusian Paralympic committees, which is what he said he feared on Wednesday when he ruled their athletes could compete. The likely place is the Switzerland-based Court of Arbitration for Sport.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-57 Component-p-0-2-48\">\u201cWe do believe that the Russian Paralympic Committee and the Belarussian Paralympic Committee may take legal action,\u201d Parsons said. \u201cBut the facts that we express here led us to understand that this was the right decision to be taking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-57 Component-p-0-2-48\">The Russian Paralympic Committee called the decision to expel its athletes \u201cbaseless\u201d and \u201cillegal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-57 Component-p-0-2-48\">\u2033(Russian athletes) have not done anything which could be interpreted as being involved in the current political complications,\u201d the RPC said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-57 Component-p-0-2-48\">Kremlin spokesman <strong>Dmitry Peskov<\/strong> also decried the decision, calling it a \u201cdisgrace.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"Component-dfp-0-2-52\">\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-57 Component-p-0-2-48\">\u201cThe situation is monstrous,\u201d Peskov said. \u201cYesterday one decision was taken and today they took another.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-57 Component-p-0-2-48\">Parsons said he understands the disappointment of the 71 Russians and 12 Belarusians who will be sent home. He said he did not know how quickly that would happen, particularly with severe COVID-19 restrictions in place in China.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-57 Component-p-0-2-48\">\u201cNo one is happy with the decision but certainly this is the best decision for the Paralympic Games to go ahead,\u201d Parsons said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-57 Component-p-0-2-48\">The IPC now joins sports like soccer, track, basketball, hockey and others that have imposed blanket bans on Russians and Belarussians.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-57 Component-p-0-2-48\">The <strong>International Olympic Committee<\/strong> on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ioc-recommends-barring-russian-belarusian-athletes-after-invasion-of-ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Monday<\/a> pushed sports organizations to exclude Russian and Belarusian athletes from international events, but it left the final decision to individual governing bodies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-57 Component-p-0-2-48\">The IOC has been slow to crack down on Russia, allowing its athletes to compete in the last four Olympics following a state-sponsored doping scandal and coverup at the 2014 Sochi Games. The IOC also has not removed the membership or leadership positions from Russians in its own organization.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-57 Component-p-0-2-48\">Parsons also addressed the Russian and Belarusian athletes directly, saying they are not at fault.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-57 Component-p-0-2-48\">\u201cTo Para athletes from the impacted countries, we are very sorry that you are affected by the decisions your governments took last week in breaching the Olympic Truce,\u201d Parsons said. \u201cYou are victims of your governments\u2019 actions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>The above article was posted by Swimming World from the Associated Press.
