IT was an uncharacteristically cold and dreary afternoon at the McDonald's Olympic Swim Stadium here but Coach Mark Schubert's Women of Troy were on fire.

Led by sophomore and Sydney Olympian Kaitlin Sandeno, who won three races; sophomore diver Blythe Hartley, who won her specialties and senior co-captains Michala Kwasny and Asa Sandlund– competing in their final home dual meet and who each won one race — No. 4 USC defeated No. 12 UCLA, 162-138.

It was the Trojans' 10th–consecutive victory over their crosstown foe, dating back to when a certain former Arkansas governor had been in the White House for only a couple of years.

USC improves to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in the Pac-10 and won its 10th in a row over UCLA. The Bruins fell to 5-4, 3-3.

Sandeno took firsts in the 200 back (1:58.15, season's best); 200 free (1:49.09) and the 200 fly (1:58.06). Hartley, double-defending NCAA champ (1- and 10-meter boards) won both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events with junior teammate Nicci Fusaro taking second in both. (Hartley was also runner-up last season on the 3-meter).

Kwasny touched first in one of her specialities, the 400 IM (4:16.68) and Sandlund took first in the 500 free (4:51.96).

USC finished 1-2-3 in the 500 free with sophomore Margie Pedder — a British Olympian — taking second (4:52.13) and Troy's third senior, Heather Valerio, taking third (4:55.62).

The Trojans also swept the 1650 free with Pedder taking first (16:35.96, season's best). She was followed by Sandlund (16:39.69) and freshman Joy Galloway (16:49.62).

Junior Jana Krohn won the 100 fly (55.15) and also took second in the 200 free (1:50.05). Freshman Kammy Miller won the 100 breast (1:04.22). USC won the 200 medley relay while UCLA won the 200y free relay.

The Bruins swept the 50 free (Sarah Plazer winning in 23.45), went 1-2 in the 100 free (freshman Kim Vanderberg takng first in 51.26 with Plazer second); won the 100 back (Taylor Spivey, 55.81) and the 200 breast (Brooke Winkler, seasonal-pr 2:16.15).

The win gives USC five points in the Lexus Gauntlet Challenge – a season-long competition between USC and UCLA. Troy currently leads the Bruins, 42.5 to 27.5. This unique program awards points for the winner of each Bruin-Trojan head-to-head contest throughout the year and the Lexus Gauntlet Trophy will be awarded to the school with the most points at year's end.

USC won the inaugural trophy in 2002.

Both schools will next compete at Pac-10s starting Feb. 27 in Federal Way, WA.

WOMEN'S NCAA DIVISION 1 DUAL MEET

UCLA VS.
