The complete domination of Carmel High School continues on for yet another year, as the Greyhounds won their 36th-straight Indiana Girls State Swimming and Diving Championship title earlier this month.<\/p>\n

The girls of Carmel extended their own national record of 36 consecutive titles with 461 points, just shy of the record-setting total of 479 set back in 2021. It did, however, mark the second-most points scored in the meet’s 48-year existence.<\/p>\n

The meet was held on Feb. 11-12 at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis, Indiana.<\/p>\n

    Carmel freshman Alex Shackell\u00a0<\/strong>broke the state record in the 100 fly after throwing down an impressive time of 51.71, besting the standard set by Vermonica Burchill\u00a0<\/strong>– another Grehyound – in 2016.<\/p>\n

    Shackell, who also earned silver in the 50 free, became the first freshman to win the 100 fly at the state meet since 2004.<\/p>\n

    Winning the 50 free for the second year in a row was Lily Christianson, a sophomore from Penn. Her time of 22.14 eclipsed the state record by the smallest of margins; the old record of 22.15 was set by\u00a0Amy Bilquist\u00a0<\/strong>back in 2015.<\/p>\n

    Another Carmel freshman also set a state record: Lynsey Bowen\u00a0<\/strong>in the 500 free. Her time of 4:45.15 during prelims tied the Indiana record first set by another Carmel alumna, Emma Nordin<\/strong>. Bowen also placed fourth in the 200 free.<\/p>\n

    Kristina Paegle<\/strong>, an Indiana commit<\/a>, won the 200 free after setting a new state record in prelims. The Bloomington South senior swam an impressive 1:45.02 before posting a 1:45.19 in finals. She also won the 100 free in 48.29, a day after setting yet another state record in prelims in 48.00.<\/p>\n

    Paegle has swam to three-straight state titles in the 100 free, which ties as the most in state history in the event.<\/p>\n

    Carmel junior Berit Berglund<\/strong>\u00a0also won her third-straight championship crown after winning the 100 back. The future Texas Longhorn’s<\/a> time of 51.50 in prelims – which she also posted in finals – broke the state record held by Claire Adams\u00a0<\/strong>in 51.65 from 2016.<\/p>\n

    The Greyhounds also swept the relays for the fourth-consecutive year on their way to clinching the team title, highlighted by a record performance in the 4×50 medley relay.<\/p>\n

    Berglund,\u00a0Vivian Wilson<\/strong>, Shackell and\u00a0Meghan Christman\u00a0<\/strong>combined in 1:38.55, besting their prelims time of 1:38.86 to break the state record twice. The old record, also held by Carmel, was 1:39.25 from 2015.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
