﻿{"id":497714,"date":"2022-02-19T16:26:39","date_gmt":"2022-02-19T23:26:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=497714"},"modified":"2022-02-19T16:26:39","modified_gmt":"2022-02-19T23:26:39","slug":"stanford-men-defeat-cal-in-last-relay-for-dual-meet-victory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/stanford-men-defeat-cal-in-last-relay-for-dual-meet-victory\/","title":{"rendered":"Stanford Men Defeat Cal in Last Relay for Dual Meet Victory"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Stanford Men Defeat Cal in Last Relay for Dual Meet Victory<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The California Golden Bears have looked like one of the top men&#8217;s teams in the nation all season, as they have been for the entirety of\u00a0<strong>Dave Durden&#8217;s<\/strong> tenure in Berkeley, but in the final dual meet of this season, the cross-bay Stanford Cardinal edged out Cal in an intense dual meet.<\/p>\n<p>Stanford led 140-137 going into the meet-ending 400 free relay, and Stanford&#8217;s <strong>Andrei Minakov\u00a0<\/strong>dove in for the anchor leg just a tenth ahead of Cal&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Daniel Carr<\/strong>. Minakov then split 41.65 to pull away and secure the win, while Cal was disqualified after a false start by Carr, and Stanford won the meet by a final score of 153-141.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Leon MacAlister<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Luke Maurer<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Jonathan Affeld<\/strong> also swam on that winning relay for Stanford, which touched in 2:49.59, and two of those three swimmers earned individual victories during the meet. MacAlister won the 100 back in 46.07, and he also placed second in the 200 back in 1:40.28, while Affeld touched out Cal&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Gabriel Jett<\/strong> to win the 200 fly, 1:41.41 to 1:41.50.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/meet\/pac-12-swimming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">More Pac-12 swimming news<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Additionally for Stanford, sixth-year swimmer <strong>Grant Shoults\u00a0<\/strong>put up a time of 8:46.79, the fourth-best mark in the nation this season, to win the 1000 free, while\u00a0<strong>Preston Forst<\/strong> won the 500 free of 4:14.10, defeating Cal&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Sean Grieshop<\/strong> (4:14.84). Cal did not enter any divers, and Stanford&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Connor Casey<\/strong> won both the 1-meter (405.38) and 3-meter (443.93) events.<\/p>\n<p>For Cal,\u00a0<strong>Bjorn Seeliger<\/strong> won the 50 free in 19.08 and the 100 free in 41.78, and\u00a0<strong>Trenton Julian\u00a0<\/strong>placed first in the 200 fly in 1:33.13. Seeliger also anchored Cal&#8217;s 200 medley relay to a come-from-behind win with his 18.47 anchor split.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Destin Lasco<\/strong> won the 200 back in 1:39.64. Lasco was the runnerup in the 200 back at the NCAA Championships, and he was just off his top-ranked time in the nation, 1:39.24. In the 200 IM, Cal&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Hugo Gonzalez\u00a0<\/strong>finished just three hundredths ahead of Lasco, 1:42.16 to 1:42.19.<\/p>\n<p><a
