WITH one day of competition remaining, the race for the women's championship in MIAA swimming and diving is coming down to a showdown between a pair of traditional rivals. Kalamazoo, meanwhile, is well on its way to a record 25th men's title.

Hope College is hosting the MIAA championships at the Holland Community Aquatics Center. The three-day meet ends today (Saturday) with finals at 6 p.m.

As it is in many MIAA sports, the women's swimming title has come down to a battle between Hope and Calvin. Entering today's competition Hope has a 43.5
point advantage over Calvin, 381-337.5. A significant event on Saturday will be the finals of three-meter diving. Earlier in the competition Calvin outscored Hope in one-meter diving by 32 points.

Kalamazoo's bid for an eighth straight men's crown has been dedicated to retiring coach Bob Kent who has guided the Hornets to 24 league championships since 1971. Kent was honored by his coaching colleagues prior to Friday's competition. Hope is on track to finish second, trailing the Hornets 416-351 with Calvin in third at 285.5.

Hope and Calvin dominated the women's action on Friday. Coach John Patnott's Flying Dutch won both relays and two individual events while Calvin captured
two others.

Hope senior Kelly Parker successfully defended her league championship in the 100-yard breaststroke with an NCAA conditional qualifying time (1:07.26).

The Flying Dutch had a one-two finish in the 100-yard backstroke. Junior Audrey Arnold successfully defended her championship (1:00.15) while sophomore teammate Kari Foust was second (1:02.03).

The Hope women opened Friday'S competition by winning the 400-yard medley relay with an NCAA conditional qualifying time (1:50.81). The relay members were Arnold, Parker, sophomore Erika Steele and sophomore Sarah Smith.

The Dutch closed the day with a relay win by capturing the 800-yard freestyle for the fourth consecutive year with a team of junior Michelle Smith, senior Erin VandenBerg, freshman Meagan O'Neil and Sarah Smith. The time of 7:49.86 was an NCAA conditional qualifying effort.

Calvin's champions in the women's meet were freshman Abby Johnson with a league record time in the 400-yard individual medley (4:37.25) and senior Katie Nagelkirk who set an MIAA record in the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.90).

In the men's meet, Hope junior Ian Kobes won the league championship in the 100-yard backstroke for the third consecutive year with an NCAA conditional
qualifying time (51.74).

Hope's only other Friday men's championship was in the 400-yard medley relay. The team of Kobes, junior Ross Geurink, senior Dan Bouwens and sophomore Jeff
Heydlauff claimed the gold for Hope for a fifth consecutive year with a time of 1:33.86.

The men's 200-yard freestyle featured NCAA qualifying performances by Kalamazoo senior J.D. Schneider and Hope senior Brian Slagh. Schneider's winning time of 1:40.60 erased the oldest record in the MIAA men's book set in 1987 by Rob Peel of Hope (1:40.87).

Schneider and Slagh have been engaged some of the meet's most exciting competition. On Thursday Slagh dethroned Schneider as the league 500-yard freestyle champion and on Friday Schneider returned the favor in the 200-yard freestyle. Their times in the 200, 1:40.60 by Schneider and 1:41.10 by Slagh, were NCAA qualifying performances.

The men's 100-yard butterfly was also an oustanding race. Calvin sophomore Peter Boumgarden defended his championship with an NCAA qualifying time (49.65) while the next three finishers had conditional times — Hope senior Dan Bouwens (51.31), Kalamazoo senior Ben Callam (51.37) and Calvin senior Ryan Johnson (51.48). Calvin won the 800-yard freestyle with a league record and qualifying time time (6:49.95). The relay members were senior Ryan Johnson, senior A.J. Penninga, junior Brad White and Boumgarden.

FRIDAY'S MIAA MEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP SUMMARY

Team Standings (through Friday)
1. Kalamazoo 416
2. Hope 351
3.
