They beat the American record by nearly three seconds. The team of\u00a0<strong>Gretchen Walsh<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Alexis Wenger<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Alex Walsh<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Kate Douglass<\/strong>, combined to swim a time of 3:22.34, compared to the previous NCAA and U.S. Open record of 3:24.59 set by NC State at last year&#8217;s NCAA Championships. Walsh touched out NC State backstroker <strong>Katharine Berkoff<\/strong> by 0.04. Wenger followed with a 56.79 breaststroke split, just ahead of\u00a0<strong>Sophie Hansson&#8217;s<\/strong> 56.96. Alex Walsh then split 49.59 on the butterfly leg, handing Douglass a lead of four tenths, and then Douglass pulled away with a massive 46.25 anchor leg.<\/p>\n<p>Virginia won ended up winning by more than two seconds over NC State as the Wolfpack team of Berkoff, Hansson,\u00a0<strong>Kylee Alons<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Abbey Webb<\/strong> touched in 3:24.78. The Wolfpack swam the third-fastest 400 medley relay in history behind only Virginia&#8217;s time here and NC State&#8217;s previous record swim from last year&#8217;s NCAAs.<\/p>\n<p>More than six seconds back in third place was the North Carolina team of\u00a0<strong>Sophie Lindner<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Lillian Higgs<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Elizabeth Vannote<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Grace Countie<\/strong>. The Tar Heels posted a time of 3:30.87.<\/p>\n<p>Previously, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/virginia-breaks-american-and-ncaa-records-in-womens-200-free-relay-gretchen-walsh-anchors-in-20-58\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Cavaliers had broken the all-time record in the 200 free relay<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/virginia-shatters-fastest-time-ever-in-womens-200-medley-relay-gretchen-walsh-swims-first-ever-sub-23-50-backstroke\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">smashed their own 200 medley relay standard<\/a>, so it was no surprise to see Virginia setting a third record in this relay.
