THE Lords reigneth!

Kenyon's Lords' men's team moved quicky into the forefront in a bid to capture their 18th North Coast Athletic Conference Championship here this evening, sweeping to victories all five events. When the racing was over, Kenyon sat in first place with 522 points. Denison was second with 408 points and Wittenberg was a distant third with 168.5 points.

Kenyon is defending NCAA Division III champ (women and men).

On the women's side, Kenyon also holds a 469-362.5 advantage over Denison, with Wooster (344) third.

Kenyon sophomore Elliott Rushton was the first male swimmer in the conference championship to hit the NCAA's automatic qualifying standard. Rushton did so in the 500 yard freestyle with a 4:33.10. His victory marks the second straight season he won the event. Last year he won in 4:35.15.

Kenyon senior Read Boon captured the title in the 200 yard individual medley with a record time of 1:52.52. That time smashed the old standard of 1:53.22 set by Denison's Matt Trumbull in 1999. Boon's time also met the NCAA automatic qualifying standard.

With Denison right on their heels through the first three events, Kenyon created more of a separation after the 50 yard freestyle event, in which the Lords claimed the top four spots. Junior Marc Courtney-Brooks led the way with a championship time of 21.19. Brooks placed third last year in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.28. Jon Philipsborn was second (21.37), Andrejs Duda was third (21.42) and Jimmy Berger was fourth (21.43). The KC results boosted the Lords lead over Denison from 17 points to 106 points.

Kenyon junior Beth Galloway got the Championship started for the women with a record swim in the 200 yard freestyle relay. Galloway swam her leadoff leg in 22.97, besting her record of 23.52 set one year ago. The time is also an NCAA DIII record, beaking the old record of 23.00 by Kenyon's Marisha Stawicki from the 1998 DIII Champiopnship in St. Louis.

Galloway teamed with Jane Alexander, Erinn Hurley and Agnese Ozolina to win the relay event in a time of 1:35.46.

The 200 yard freestyle relay teams from Kenyon, Wooster and Denison all made the NCAA Championship automatic qualifying cut.

Kenyon's Rachel Smith won the 500 freestyle in 5:00.28, which met the NCAA automatic qualifying standard. Wooster's Elizabeth Roesch placed second and also met the NCAA's 'A' standard with her 5:02.91.

Hiram freshman Beth Groselle won the 200 yard individual medley in 2:08.54 and became the first swimmer, male or female, in the college's history to win a North Coast Athletic Conference individual championship. Her time, along with Lauren Clark's (Denison) and Liz Whittman's (Wooster), was good enough for automatic entry into NCAAs Whittman was last year's champ with a time of 2:06.90.

Wooster got its first individual championship when Kayla Heising out-touched Kenyon's Beth Galloway in the 50 free. Heising clocked in at 23.33, while Galloway stopped the clock at 23.34. Galloway was the defending champion and is the current NCAC record-holder in the 50 freestyle.

NORTH COAST ATHLETIC CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS
C.T.
