After <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/virginia-breaks-american-and-ncaa-records-in-womens-200-free-relay-gretchen-walsh-anchors-in-20-58\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">breaking the American and NCAA records in the 200 freestyle relay Wednesday evening<\/a>, another Cavaliers quarter broke the all-time record in the women&#8217;s 200 medley relay. The team of\u00a0<strong>Gretchen Walsh<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Alexis Wenger<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Lexi Cuomo<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Kate Douglass<\/strong> swam a mark of 1:31.81, more than a second faster than the previous American and NCAA record of 1:32.93.<\/p>\n<p>The Cavaliers owned the previous mark from exactly one year previously at the ACC Championships, and three of the swimmers were back from that 2021 squad. <strong>Caroline Gmelich<\/strong>, last year&#8217;s backstroker, graduated, Walsh stepped into her shoes and led off in 22.82, the fastest 50-yard backstroke performance ever recorded. Michigan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Maggie Mac Neil<\/strong> owned the previous top mark at 23.02. Wenger then split 25.77, and Cuomo swam the butterfly in 22.68 before Douglass came home in a blistering 20.54. Virginia was able to break the record without versatile star\u00a0<strong>Alex Walsh<\/strong> competing, allowing her to focus on the other four relay events.<\/p>\n<p>NC State finished second in the event in 1:33.25 with <strong>Katharine Berkoff<\/strong>, <strong>Sophie Hansson<\/strong>, <strong>Abby Arens<\/strong> and <strong>Kylee Alons<\/strong>.
