{"id":497447,"date":"2022-02-17T13:13:15","date_gmt":"2022-02-17T20:13:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=497447"},"modified":"2022-02-17T13:13:15","modified_gmt":"2022-02-17T20:13:15","slug":"lucy-bell-takes-down-missy-franklins-200-im-colorado-record","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/lucy-bell-takes-down-missy-franklins-200-im-colorado-record\/","title":{"rendered":"Lucy Bell Takes Down Missy Franklin\u2019s 200 IM Colorado Record"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Lucy Bell Takes Down Missy Franklin\u2019s 200 IM Colorado Record<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Stanford commit <strong>Lucy Bell<\/strong> finished her high school career in style, taking down the Colorado state record in the 200 individual medley that belonged to two-time Olympian <strong>Missy Franklin.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Bell, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/stanford-secures-verbal-from-u-s-national-junior-teamer-and-junior-national-champion-lucy-bell\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">senior at Fossil Ridge High School<\/a>, won the event easily at the Colorado High School Activities Association (CSHAA) <a href=\"https:\/\/chsaanow.com\/documents\/2021\/7\/31\/\/chsaa_5a_meet_results_and_scores.pdf?id=467\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Class 5A Championships on Wednesday<\/a>. Bell went 1:59.94 in prelims before blasting a 1:56.14 in the final.<\/p>\n<p>She bested the field by more than six seconds and was more than five seconds under the automatic All-American cut. In the process, she downed the state record set by Franklin in 2013 at 1:56.85.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s super cool,&#8221; Bell <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coloradoan.com\/story\/sports\/high-school\/2022\/02\/16\/lucy-bell-breaks-missy-franklins-colorado-200-individual-medley-mark-5-a-state-championship\/6822474001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told <em>The Coloradoan<\/em><\/a>. &#8220;I\u2019ve known about that record since I joined high school swimming. It\u2019s always been a goal of mine but I\u2019ve never wanted to really outright say it. Just to accomplish that is beyond exciting.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Franklin set that record in 2013, her senior season at Regis Jesuit High School. That was after she\u2019d won four gold medals, including the backstroke double, and a bronze at the 2012 Olympics in London. Franklin was the reigning Swimming World Female Swimmer of the Year at that point.<\/p>\n<p>Bell would go on to win the 100 freestyle in 49.09, allowing Franklin\u2019s 5A record to stand. (The overall state record was re-set in 2021 when <strong>Anna Shaw, <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/stanford-gets-verbal-from-colorado-5a-state-50-free-champion-anna-shaw\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bell\u2019s future Stanford teammate<\/a>, went 48.24.) It\u2019s the third straight year Bell has won the 100 free, after winning the 100 butterfly instead of competing in the IM as a junior. Bell anchored the 400 free relay in 48.23, rallying Fossil Ridge to victory.<\/p>\n<p>For Bell, taking down a record belonging to an icon like Franklin makes it extra exciting.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Having it be someone like Missy Franklin is super special,\u201d she said.\u00a0Just to even come close to that time is really good. It was a great reminder that\u00a0the hard work I\u2019ve put in\u00a0since I\u2019ve started swimming all paid off.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lucy Bell Takes Down
