{"id":497016,"date":"2022-02-12T22:23:46","date_gmt":"2022-02-13T05:23:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=497016"},"modified":"2022-02-12T22:23:46","modified_gmt":"2022-02-13T05:23:46","slug":"evangelos-makrygiannis-gets-usc-started-in-win-over-utah","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/evangelos-makrygiannis-gets-usc-started-in-win-over-utah\/","title":{"rendered":"Evangelos Makrygiannis Gets USC Started in Win over Utah"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Evangelos Makrygiannis Gets USC Started in Win over Utah<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Evangelos Makrygiannis<\/strong> swept the backstroke events and helped USC win the medley relay in a 164.5-96.5 handling of Utah <a href=\"https:\/\/usctrojans.com\/news\/2022\/2\/12\/mens-swimming-diving-no-11-usc-mens-swim-downs-utah-164-5-96-5-to-wrap-regular-season.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Saturday in a Pac-12 meet<\/a> at Ute Natatorium in Salt Lake City.<\/p>\n<p>Makrygiannis got the Trojans off and running with a time of 1:26.50 in the medley relay, joining <strong>Trent Pellini, Nikola Miljenic<\/strong> and <strong>Artem Selin<\/strong> to win by .29 seconds. Makrygiannis went on to win the 100 backstroke in 47.58 and claimed the 200 back in 1:45.55, a decisive win by more than three seconds.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/utahutes.com\/documents\/2022\/2\/12\/utahvuscresults.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Results<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>USC took control with a pair of 1-2-3 podium sweeps early in the meet. Pellini led the way in the 100 breast, winning in 52.99 and followed to the wall by teammates <strong>Henry Blaul<\/strong> and Miljenic. The Trojans built on that the next event, with <strong>Harry Homans<\/strong> winning the 200 butterfly in 1:46.42 ahead of mates <strong>Jackson Odgers<\/strong> and <strong>Danny Syrkin.<\/strong> USC would also sweep the 200 breast podium with <strong>Ben Dillard<\/strong> (1:56.48), <strong>Chris O\u2019Grady<\/strong> and Blaul.<\/p>\n<p>Homans added a win in the 200 IM. <strong>Daniel Matheson<\/strong> won the 1,000 free and the 500 free. Selin won the 50 and joined Miljenic, Pellini and 200 free champ\/100 free runner-up <strong>Max Saunders<\/strong> in winning the 400 free relay. USC finishes the dual-meet season with a 5-2 record.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/meet\/pac-12-swimming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pac-12 Swimming News<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Utah won <a href=\"https:\/\/utahutes.com\/news\/2022\/2\/12\/mens-swimming-diving-mens-swim-drops-dual-against-usc-at-home.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">two events on the day<\/a>. <strong>Santi Contreras<\/strong> won the 100 fly in 48.18, outkicking Miljenic at the wall. <strong>Finn O\u2019Haimhirgin<\/strong> bounced back from finishing second in the
