A four-time Olympic medalist, Hogshead-Makar has spent the past two months fighting for fairness for biological female athletes.<\/p>\n<p>Hogshead-Makar\u2019s most-recent battle for a level playing field has been the result of Lia Thomas, a transgender woman at the University of Pennsylvania, posting some of the top times in the country in her events. Thomas was formerly a member of the men\u2019s squad at Penn, but transitioned to female and joined the women\u2019s team. She has been on testosterone suppressants, but her male-puberty advantage, according to science, provides advantages unavailable to biological women.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaswimming.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USA Swimming<\/a> revealed its new guidelines for transgender participation, including the need to return a test with a testosterone threshold lower than 5 nmol\/L. The NCAA initially indicated it would adopt USA Swimming\u2019s guidelines, but announced on Thursday that it would require transgender athletes to produce a testosterone threshold of 10 nmol\/L. If Thomas can get down to that level, she will be eligible to compete at the NCAA Championships next month in Atlanta.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce again, biological women\u2019s cry for fair sports competition has gone unheard,\u201d Hogshead-Makar said. \u201cDespite over a dozen studies demonstrating that transgender woman Lia Thomas has unfair physical, biological advantages that biological women cannot match, biological women are not at the table making decisions about our sport category. If you re-read the NCAA\u2019s statement, biological women\u2019s interests were never considered, they aren\u2019t even mentioned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMostly, it has been women that fought for creating \u2018women\u2019s\u2019 sports. And yet, their voice and interests have been excluded from the NCAA\u2019s decision-making process. I\u2019m sadly aware that cis women\u2019s exclusion from the table has been purposeful. I assure you, women are determined to rectify their sport\u2019s eligibility criteria, to be consistent with science and fairness.<\/p>\n<div class=\"css-1dbjc4n r-1habvwh r-1wbh5a2\">\n<div class=\"css-1dbjc4n r-k200y r-1sw30gj r-pm2fo r-1ets6dv r-1867qdf r-deolkf r-dnmrzs r-1ny4l3l r-ymttw5 r-1f1sjgu r-o7ynqc r-6416eg\" role=\"presentation\">\n<div class=\"css-901oao r-18jsvk2 r-37j5jr r-a023e6 r-16dba41 r-rjixqe r-bcqeeo r-1udh08x r-bnwqim r-fdjqy7 r-1rozpwm r-qvutc0\" dir=\"auto\"><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">\u201cSpineless.
