{"id":496173,"date":"2022-01-28T19:25:42","date_gmt":"2022-01-29T02:25:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=496173"},"modified":"2022-01-28T19:25:42","modified_gmt":"2022-01-29T02:25:42","slug":"florida-state-sweeps-university-of-tampa-in-dual-meet-finale","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/florida-state-sweeps-university-of-tampa-in-dual-meet-finale\/","title":{"rendered":"Florida State Sweeps University of Tampa in Dual Meet Finale"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Florida State Sweeps University of Tampa in Dual Meet Finale<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The No.19\/RV Florida State swimming and diving team honored its senior class by picking up two wins against Tampa on Friday at the Morcom Aquatics Center.<\/p>\n<p>The 19th-ranked men\u2019s team (4-0, 1-0 ACC) finished the season unbeaten after defeating the Spartans (7-3) 221-40, while the RV women moved to 6-1, 2-0 ACC on the year following the 219-43 victory over Tampa (8-2).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday was for celebrating our seniors,\u201d FSU head coach <strong>Neal Studd<\/strong> said. \u201cIt was a chilly day, but we didn\u2019t let that stop us from swimming fast and having fun. It was a great team atmosphere, and I am very glad we sent the seniors out on a good note.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/category\/college\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">More college news<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The women and men established new marks in the 200 medley relay to start the meet.<\/p>\n<p>The team of <strong>Tania<\/strong> <strong>Quaglieri<\/strong>, <strong>Nina<\/strong> <strong>Kucheran<\/strong>, <strong>Jenny Halden<\/strong> and <strong>Rebecca Moynihan<\/strong> turned in a season best of 1:37.00, which is an NCAA consideration time. The squad took down the record set by the FSU team of <strong>Maddie<\/strong> <strong>Cohen<\/strong>, <strong>Ida<\/strong> <strong>Hulkko<\/strong>, <strong>Leila Johnston<\/strong> and <strong>Emma Terebo<\/strong> back in 2018 at 1:38.97.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mason<\/strong> <strong>Herbet<\/strong>, <strong>Izaak<\/strong> <strong>Bastian<\/strong>, <strong>Max McCusker<\/strong> and <strong>Peter Varjasi<\/strong> clocked a 1:25.40, lowering their own mark that was set back in October at 1:25.88.<\/p>\n<p>Herbet lowered his 100 back pool record to 46.07 (47.37) and <strong>Yordan Yanchev<\/strong> took down <strong>Conor Dwyer\u2019s<\/strong> (Florida) standard in the 500 free (4:22.78) that was set back in 2010, touching at 4:18.87.<\/p>\n<p>McCusker followed Yanchev with a record of his own in the 100 fly at 46.87, besting <strong>Conner Knight\u2019s<\/strong> 47.23 that was set back in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Herbet turned in his third record of the day, lowering his own 200 IM (1:48.75) to 1:47.35.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Emily Trieschmann<\/strong> led the sweep of the 1000 free, turning in a personal best of 9:56.75, and <strong>Zach Smith<\/strong> was first in the men\u2019s event at 9:14.50.<\/p>\n<p>In the 200 free, <strong>Phoebe Griffiths<\/strong> led the sweep with a time of 1:48.55. <strong>Aziz Ghaffari<\/strong> followed by leading the way for the men (1:35.60).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pia Murray<\/strong> and <strong>Maddie McDonald<\/strong> tied for first place in the 100 back with a time of 54.64.<\/p>\n<p>Freshman <strong>Maddy Huggins<\/strong> clocked a 1:01.19 in the 100 breast, leading the sweep and Varjasi turned in a time of 54.01 for the win in the men\u2019s race.<\/p>\n<p>Rookie <strong>Edith Jernstedt<\/strong> was just off her personal best in the 200 fly, touching at 1:58.64 for the victory, and <strong>Brennan Hammond<\/strong> brought home the win in the men\u2019s race at 1:46.79, which was a career best.<\/p>\n<p>Moynihan (22.83) and McCusker (19.79) led the sweep of the 50 free before the break.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Zsofia Kurdi<\/strong> secured the 100 free victory (50.37) while <strong>Blake Moran<\/strong> led the sweep of the men\u2019s at 44.46.<\/p>\n<p>Working from lane one, <strong>Sydney Cole<\/strong> turned in a best time in the 200 back for the victory at 1:58.84. In the men\u2019s 200 back, <strong>Tyler Hanley<\/strong> led the sweep, clocking 1:49.03.<\/p>\n<p>Kucheran won the women\u2019s 200 breast (2:13.82), leading the sweep ahead of <strong>Rachel Moran<\/strong> (2:15.17) in second, who swam her career best time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jason Martindale<\/strong> followed with the win in the men\u2019s 200 breast (2:01.37).<\/p>\n<p>Freshman <strong>Sydney Boals<\/strong> was the winner in the 500 free behind her personal best of 4:55.91. Murray added her second win of the day, taking the 100 fly at 54.43, which was her career best.<\/p>\n<p>Jernstedt held on for the win in the women\u2019s 200 IM (2:02.92), leading the sweep.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hannah<\/strong> <strong>Womer<\/strong>, <strong>Gabrianna<\/strong> <strong>Banks<\/strong>, <strong>Aryanna<\/strong> <strong>Fernandes<\/strong> and McDonald closed out the women\u2019s meet with a win in the 200 free relay (1:32.50).<\/p>\n<p>Varjasi, <strong>Blake<\/strong> <strong>Moran<\/strong>, <strong>Ian Cooper<\/strong> and newcomer <strong>Jokubas Keblys<\/strong> (1:20.12) cruised to the win in the men\u2019s 200 free relay.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAside from celebrating our seniors, we had some of our underclassmen step up and swim best times,\u201d Studd added. \u201cThat was huge, especially as we head toward the postseason.
