{"id":495835,"date":"2022-01-21T19:52:22","date_gmt":"2022-01-22T02:52:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=495835"},"modified":"2022-01-21T19:52:22","modified_gmt":"2022-01-22T02:52:22","slug":"cal-swimming-sweeps-arizona-in-pac-12-showdown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/cal-swimming-sweeps-arizona-in-pac-12-showdown\/","title":{"rendered":"Cal Swimming Sweeps Arizona in Pac-12 Showdown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The second-ranked Cal men&#8217;s swimming &amp; diving team was led by three individual event wins from <strong>Gabriel Jett\u00a0<\/strong>in a dominant 173-80 Pac-12 dual meet victory over No. 20 Arizona Friday afternoon at Spieker Aquatics Complex.<\/p>\n<p>Jett opened his day with the fastest time (9:01.56) by a Bear this season in the 1,000-yard freestyle, turned in an NCAA B cut of 46.90 in the 100\u00a0butterfly and posted a time of 1:44.53 in the 200 fly.<\/p>\n<p>It was the 17th-straight dual meet win for Cal, dating back to Oct. 3, 2018. The Bears won 12 of 15 events against the Wildcats and posted the top times in the final two events of the day (200 individual medley and 400 free relay) racing as exhibitions.<\/p>\n<p>California opened the meet by taking the top two spots in the 200 medley relay, led by <strong>Hugo Gonzalez,\u00a0Reece Whitley,\u00a0Trenton Julian\u00a0and\u00a0Jack Alexy<\/strong>\u00a0in 1:26.20.\u00a0<strong>Daniel Carr,\u00a0Forrest Frazier,\u00a0Dare Rose<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Destin<\/strong> <strong>Lasco<\/strong>\u00a0finished right behind in 1:26.71.<\/p>\n<p>Cal swept the podium spots in the 500 free, 200 free, 100 free, 50 free, 200 back and 200 fly events.<\/p>\n<p>Gonzalez earned his second win of the day in the 200 back, turning in an NCAA B cut of 1:43.63, the fourth-fastest time by a Bear this season. Julian also picked up his second victory with a time of 1:36.15 in the 200 free, before closing out his day with a time of 4:23.50 and a win in the 500 free.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bjorn Seeliger<\/strong> added an individual win in the 100 free in 43.11. Carr took the victory in the 50 free (19.88), while Frazier (55.49) won the 100 breaststroke and Lasco (47.89) touched the wall first in the 100 back.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/category\/college\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">More college news<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Swimming its first dual meet of the new year, Cal raced past Arizona at Spieker Aquatics Complex, 153-92, with the Golden Bears winning 11 of 14 races.<\/p>\n<p>Senior <strong>Isabel Ivey<\/strong> paced Cal with three individual victories \u2013 100 back (53.41), 50 free (22.79) and 200 individual medley (2:00.73) \u2013 in addition to leading off the winning 200 medley relay.<\/p>\n<p>Three Golden Bear freshmen also got their hands to the wall first, starting with <strong>Fanni Fabian<\/strong> in the 1000 free, who posted a time of 10:07.01, which was more than nine seconds ahead of the rest of the field. <strong>Lizzy Cook<\/strong> was next with her triumph in the 200 free (1:49.03), as she led a 1-2-3-4 Cal finish in the race. <strong>Leah Polonsky<\/strong> also prevailed in the 200 breast in 2:13.40.<\/p>\n<p>Other Bears to earn first-place status were <strong>Elise Garcia<\/strong> in the 100 free (50.14),<strong> Isabel Stadden<\/strong> in the 200 back (1:56.61) and <strong>Mia Motekaitis<\/strong> in the 500 free (4:55.21).
