{"id":495513,"date":"2022-01-15T21:54:21","date_gmt":"2022-01-16T04:54:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=495513"},"modified":"2022-01-15T21:54:21","modified_gmt":"2022-01-16T04:54:21","slug":"distance-depth-helps-auburn-men-squeak-out-split-with-alabama","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/distance-depth-helps-auburn-men-squeak-out-split-with-alabama\/","title":{"rendered":"Distance Depth Helps Auburn Men Squeak Out Split with Alabama"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Distance Depth Helps Auburn Men Squeak Out Split with Alabama<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Auburn\u2019s distance depth led the Tigers to a four-point victory over rival Alabama <a href=\"https:\/\/auburntigers.com\/news\/2022\/1\/15\/swimming-diving-auburn-men-notch-road-victory-tigers-split-with-alabama.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in a dual meet Saturday.<\/a> It allowed the Iron Bowl rivals to split the meet, with the Alabama women getting a decisive win on Senior Day in Tuscaloosa.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Men: Auburn 152, Alabama 148<\/li>\n<li>Women: Alabama 161, Auburn 139<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Aryan Makhija <\/strong>edged teammate <strong>Michael Bonson<\/strong> by eight hundredths of a second to win the men\u2019s 1,000 free. Bonson got the win over <strong>Mikkel Gadgaard<\/strong> in the 500 free.<strong> Grant<\/strong> <strong>Davis<\/strong> was third in both races, points the Eagles would desperately need down the stretch. Gadgaard also won the 200 free.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Aidan Stoffle<\/strong> won the 100 backstroke for the Tigers, .01 ahead of <strong>Matthew Menke.<\/strong> Auburn took both butterfly races, with <strong>Matthew Yish<\/strong> winning the 100 and <strong>Mason Mathias<\/strong> the 200.<\/p>\n<p>Alabama finished strong but couldn\u2019t quite close the gap. <strong>Derek Maas<\/strong> (1:47.77) led a 1-2-3 result in the 200 IM, then the Tide won the 400 free relay with the foursome of <strong>Tyler Sesvold,<\/strong> Menke, <strong>Kaique Alves<\/strong> and <strong>Jonathan Berneburg.<\/strong> But those 25 points in the last two events were not enough.<\/p>\n<p>Maas had earlier won the 100 breaststroke and 200 breast. Alves won the 100 free by a tenth ahead of Stoffle, and Menke claimed a tight race in the 200 back.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/meet\/sec-swimming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SEC Swimming<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The squads split diving, with Alabama\u2019s <strong>Kevin Li<\/strong> winning the 1-meter and <strong>Conner Pruitt<\/strong> claiming the 3-meter for Auburn.<\/p>\n<p>On the women\u2019s side, Alabama\u2019s seniors <a href=\"https:\/\/rolltide.com\/news\/2022\/1\/15\/swimming-diving-alabama-womens-swimming-and-diving-earns-senior-day-win-over-auburn.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">did plenty of celebrating<\/a>. <strong>Kensey McMahon<\/strong> won the 1,000 free, then finished second to classmate <strong>Morgan Scott<\/strong> in the 200 and later took first in the 500 free. Scott also won the 100 free and was part of the winning 200 medley relay.<\/p>\n<p>Joining her was <strong>Rhyan White,<\/strong> the American Olympian who won three events Saturday. She claimed the 100 back in 53.09 seconds, the 200 back (1:54.93) and the 100 fly (53.86).<\/p>\n<p>Freshman <strong>Avery Wiseman<\/strong> swept the 100 breast and 200 breast to go with the medley relay leg. The relay anchor, <strong>Kalia Antoniou,<\/strong> won the 50 free in 22.57 and was third in the 100 free. <strong>Tanesha Lucoe<\/strong> swept the diving victories.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Avery Bargeron<\/strong> won the 200 fly for Auburn in a 1-2 with <strong>Hannah Ownbey.
