{"id":495199,"date":"2022-01-10T17:01:52","date_gmt":"2022-01-11T00:01:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=495199"},"modified":"2022-01-10T17:01:52","modified_gmt":"2022-01-11T00:01:52","slug":"despite-repeated-inquiries-ncaa-remains-mum-on-lia-thomas-controversy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/despite-repeated-inquiries-ncaa-remains-mum-on-lia-thomas-controversy\/","title":{"rendered":"Despite Repeated Inquiries, NCAA Remains Mum On Lia Thomas Controversy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Despite Repeated Inquiries, NCAA Remains Mum On Lia Thomas Controversy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In recent days, both the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ivy-league-releases-statement-supporting-lia-thomas-participation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ivy League<\/a> and the University of Pennsylvania have publicly supported <strong>Lia Thomas<\/strong> and her right to compete in women&#8217;s swimming events. However, the NCAA has so far been mum on the controversy surrounding Thomas. The organization has released no statement in support of Thomas or in affirmation of its rule which allows transgender athletes to compete in the female category after undergoing one year of hormone therapy.<\/p>\n<p>The NCAA also did not respond to multiple inquiries from\u00a0<em>Swimming World<\/em>, including by email, telephone and a form on the official NCAA website, relating to Thomas.\u00a0<em>Swimming World<\/em> asked whether the NCAA was considering making changes to its policy covering transgender athletes and whether <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncaa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the organization<\/a> still considers one year of hormone therapy sufficient for an athlete to compete as a female if she has undergone male puberty. That rule instituted by the NCAA is based on science more than 10 years old. Additionally, we asked for the NCAA to respond to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/without-ncaa-action-the-effects-of-lia-thomas-situation-are-akin-to-doping\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">claims of unfairness when Thomas races in women&#8217;s events<\/a>\u00a0and also for comment on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/penn-parents-express-further-concerns-over-lia-thomas-competing-on-womens-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reports that Penn swimmers and parents<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/daily-mail-penn-swimmers-considered-boycott-over-lia-thomas-situation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">have pushed back on Thomas&#8217; participation in women&#8217;s racing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/lia-thomas-transgender-swimmer-from-penn-swims-fastest-times-in-nation-controversy-brewing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thomas currently ranks first in the nation in the women&#8217;s 500 freestyle and 200 freestyle<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/under-scrutiny-in-routine-final-home-meet-penns-lia-thomas-wins-twice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">she competed in her final home meet at Penn on Saturday<\/a>, where she won both of her main events while finishing sixth in the 100 free. Thomas is expected to headline the women&#8217;s Ivy League Championships next month, and she is already automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships in Atlanta in March. This will be her first collegiate championship season since transitioning.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement Friday, the Ivy League &#8220;reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to providing an inclusive environment for all student-athletes while condemning transphobia and discrimination in any form.\u201d Penn likewise declared it was \u201ccommitted to be a welcoming and inclusive environment for all our student-athletes, coaches and staff and we hold true to that commitment today and in the future.\u201d Several top American swimmers have also weighed in on the situation, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/olympian-erika-brown-we-cannot-allow-transgender-females-to-compete-against-biological-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021 Olympian\u00a0<strong>Erika Brown<\/strong> claiming that Thomas competing created an unfair playing field<\/a> while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/jacob-pebley-urges-consideration-of-mental-health-in-transgender-swimming-debate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2016 Olympian\u00a0<strong>Jacob Pebley<\/strong> urged consideration of mental health as he spoke out in support of Thomas<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Despite Repeated
