SAN DIEGO, Feb. 9. THE 20th-ranked ASU women's water polo team dropped two games over the weekend at the UCSD Arena Invitational tournament in San Diego.<\/p>\n
The first game the Arizona State water polo team played as a nationally ranked squad did not go as planned Saturday at the Sun Devils were handed a 10-2 defeat by No. 4 Long Beach State. ASU was limited
\nto one goal in each half as the physical 49ers put another tally in the Sun Devils' record, dropping them to 3-2 on the year while LBSU won its season opener.<\/p>\n
Daya Mau (Fr., Honolulu, Hawaii) and Holly Newman (Fr., San Diego, Calif.) were the lone scorers for the Sun Devils with Mau's goal coming on a four-meter penalty shot that was drawn by the play of Catharine Taber (Jr., Clayton, Calif.). <\/p>\n
Cassie Azevedo led the 49ers with four goals on the day while two of her teammates added two apiece.<\/p>\n
LBSU led at the end of the first, 2-0, and built a 5-1 lead heading into the half. ASU was held scoreless in the third while the 49ers had their largest offensive output of the game, caging four goals to put the score at 9-1. Both teams scored in the final stanza to bring the score to 10-2 at the final horn. <\/p>\n
Defensively for the Sun Devils, Lizzy Houck (Fr., San Diego, Calif.) made nine saves in goal.<\/p>\n

ON Saturday evening, ASU faced a ranked opponent and,
\nfor the secnd time in a row were taken to school, this time via a 9-2 decision to No. 16 UC Davis. ASU, now 3-3 on the year, is 0-2 in their first games away from Tempe.<\/p>\n
The Aggies started strong with two goals in the first and a trio in the second to forge a 5-0 lead. The Sun Devils did their scoring in the second half, though their two tallies were not enough as UCD tacked on another four to make the final margin, 9-2. <\/p>\n
Daya Mau (Fr., Honolulu, Hawaii), for the second game in a row, scored one of the two ASU goals on a four-meter penalty shot, being afforded the chance when Gili Kollan (So., Kiriat Bialik, Israel) drew the
\npenalty. Elaine Bentley (Fr., San Diego, Calif.) scored the second ASU goal.<\/p>\n
The Sun Devils fell into the fourth pool of championship play and will meet Cal Baptist Sunday at 7 a.m. PST. ASU also will face No. 12 UC Irvine at 3 p.m. PST to conclude play in the event.<\/p>\n
