﻿{"id":494381,"date":"2021-12-23T06:21:14","date_gmt":"2021-12-23T13:21:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=494381"},"modified":"2021-12-23T16:47:12","modified_gmt":"2021-12-23T23:47:12","slug":"mel-marshall-tears-in-tokyo-and-answering-whispers-of-getting-lucky-with-peaty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/mel-marshall-tears-in-tokyo-and-answering-whispers-of-getting-lucky-with-peaty\/","title":{"rendered":"Mel Marshall: Tears In Tokyo And Answering Whispers Of Getting Lucky With Peaty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Mel Marshall: Tears In Tokyo And Answering Whispers Of Getting Lucky With Peaty<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When <strong>Adam Peaty<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/olympics-adam-peaty-defends-100-breaststroke-gold-arno-kamminga-gets-silver\/\">won the 100m breaststroke at the Olympics in July<\/a>, coach <strong>Mel Marshall<\/strong> was up in the stands of the <strong>Tokyo Aquatics Centre<\/strong> crying tears of relief.<\/p>\n<p>Peaty had become the first Briton to retain an Olympic swimming title when he added gold in Tokyo to his Rio 2016 crown.<\/p>\n<p>There was also gold in the mixed medley relay and silver in the men\u2019s event but it was after Peaty defended \u2013 or in his words attacked \u2013 his Olympic crown that the tears flowed.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t the first time for Marshall \u2013 who has guided Peaty through a timewarp since he was 14 \u2013 who had been similarly overcome with emotion in Rio, five years previously.<\/p>\n<p>But this time there were extra layers of emotion given the pressure brought to bear by the pandemic as well as the expectation that sustained success brings.<\/p>\n<p>Marshall told Swimming World:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI was very tearful after the Adam situation \u2013 just because it was a relief. There is only one result for him and that is that he has got to win.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wants to win and he wants to do it better than he has ever done it and so there is only one result.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo to be able to defend that with everything that had gone on &#8211; it was just a big relief because you worry about that (kind of) result: they are hard to find, incredibly difficult to get those kind of results.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think people just think \u2018oh you\u2019ve got him, easy\u2019 but anybody who has ever been up at that level and tried to stay at that level for that long realises there is no easy to that journey at all.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe thinking is constant, it\u2019s creative and it never stops.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd when it does stop the results start to stop.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_460710\" style=\"width: 367px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" who paid a visit to the Tokyo podium.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Luke Greenbank<\/strong> took bronze in the 200 back and swam the opening leg as GB finished second in the men\u2019s medley relay.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Anna Hopkin<\/strong> anchored the mixed medley relay to gold while also finishing seventh in the 100 free.<\/p>\n<p>For Marshall \u2013 who herself swam at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics \u2013 there was a sweet satisfaction in light of some asserting that it is easy to find success with the likes of Peaty.<\/p>\n<p>She said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt\u2019s the best job in the world: I love that pace and I love that intensity that comes with it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is quite insensitive when people think that I have just got lucky: I take great offence at that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019ve been on the full breadth of my journey, there was 20% luck but I maximised the luck that I got for sure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was great in the summer in terms of results \u2013 I got six medals so it\u2019s not just a fluke \u2013 that was a nice thing for me to have that affirmation back for myself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t have to become what sometimes people say and I am really lucky but I have got to deliver medals and I delivered medals and I felt really privileged and proud that I have achieved that.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>Negotiating The Covid Pressures<\/h3>\n<p>So too was there the pressure of covid that had brought about the one-year delay of the Olympics and that necessitated social distancing measures as it wreaked its deadly added:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cEvery day was just so dark as in there was no competitions which is what we live for; there was no clear \u2018let\u2019s plan this in eight months\u2019 time\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was just one week at a time and try to make the best of a difficult circumstance. I hadn\u2019t coached the group together without one being at one end and one being at the other for 17 months.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me it\u2019s all about intimacy and relationships and you just felt like there was this glass shield in the way all the time. So we had to work hard for that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that we as a staff group really protected the athletes from what was going on and they were just able to do their business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLikewise the athletes really were the best version of themselves in the way they prepared: it was structured, they were present in the sessions and there was a real appreciation of what was going on and it was a hard time but we became better people through the challenge I\u2019m sure.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>Adam Peaty Learns Lessons On The Dancefloor<\/h3>\n<p>Peaty appeared on BBC\u2019s \u2018Strictly Come Dancing\u2019 show following Tokyo.<\/p>\n<p>With partner <strong>Katya Jones<\/strong>, the eight-time world champion <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/adam-peaty-eliminated-from-strictly-come-dancing-olympic-star-flourished-in-new-domain\/\">competed until the sixth week when they got voted out.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was a move endorsed by Marshall who said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAbsolutely. Again and again\u2026.how far away from the truth the news is. The embellishments, the negativity and just creating stories and all that stuff just to get interest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must stop that \u2013 it\u2019s killing the nation that is.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just the bullshit wheel.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>Marshall Works On Adam Peaty The Man<\/h3>\n<p>Peaty has long been happy to speak out on issues important to him and to show fearless leadership beyond the pool deck.<\/p>\n<p>From <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/adam-peaty-responds-sport-is-a-powerful-vehicle-for-athlete-protests\/\">backing an athlete\u2019s right to protest at the Olympics<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/adam-peaty-awaits-unpaid-wages-from-the-isl-and-urges-athletes-to-exert-greater-power\/\">exhorting his fellow swimmers to harness their power and influence for the greater good of the sport<\/a>, Peaty has become a moral compass.<\/p>\n<p>Marshall said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThat is one of the things I have tried to work on throughout this cycle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you get the bigger profile people will come at you and you\u2019ve got to be Batman.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve got to put a bulletproof armour on and you\u2019ve got to know exactly what your moral purpose is, your business purpose and your athletic purpose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re in touch with your why, it doesn\u2019t matter what is said about you and who says what.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s irrelevant because the people who matter don\u2019t mind and the people that mind don\u2019t matter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is just about being strong enough to maintain your integrity and be who you are throughout all those challenges that come your way when you\u2019re Olympic
