THE Southern California Trojan men’s swimming and diving team lost its second dual meet in as many days to another strong Bay Area team, this time to the Stanford Cardinal.

USC couldn’t get ahead at all during the meet, falling 170-128. The meet started with Stanford holding off strong butterfly and freestyle legs from Southern Cal in the 400 medley relay, winning with a 3:13.49 to USC’s 3:13.68.

The men got to swim a 1650 freestyle today, not a common event in dual meet competition. Danny Thomson got the comfortable win with a 15:01.41 as Stanford went 1-2-3 in the event to open up an unsurmountable lead. Justin Buck was second with a 15:23.96 and Bryan Offutt took third in 15:33.05.

Southern Cal answered back in the 200 free, with a 1-2 finish, led by Cristian Quintero’s 1:36.50. Dmitri Colupaev was the leader after 150 yards, as is his custom, but was nipped to the wall and finished second with a 1:36.74. Stanford’s Tom Kremer had a strong final 50 yards to nearly get into the top two, placing third with a 1:37.00.

David Nolan was not as fast as expected in the 100 backstroke, one of two events in which he is the reigning NCAA champion. He was second to USC freshman Dylan Carter at the halfway point, but passed Carter for the win with a 48.84 to Carter’s 48.91.

Daniel Le picked up another win for Stanford with a 54.97 in the 100 breast, his fastest time of the season by three tenths. Southern California picked up the next two events, with Cary Wright beating Gray Umbach in the 200 fly, 1:47.03 to 1:47.72. Santo Condorelli won the 50 free over teammate Maclin Davis by the slimmest of margins, 20.49 to 20.50. Cristian Quintero was disqualified for a false start and might have given Southern Cal a 1-2-3 finish, which might not have affected the overall outcome but was not a positive moment.

After Kristian Ipsen won the 1-meter springboard event by 30 points, Kremer got his revenge on Cloupaev in the 100 free with a 44.46 to win the event. Colupaev was a hand length behind with a 44.59 and Thomas Stephens of Stanford got third with a 44.68.

Wright was the first to pick up a double win today, taking the 200 back with a 1:47.16 over NCAA finalist David Nolan, who was second with a 1:47.71. Le followed it up with a sweep of the breaststrokes, winning the 200 in the only sub-2:00 swim of the day. His 1:59.62 beat out USC freshman Stephen Stumph, who was second with a 2:00.74. It was another season best for Le, his first time under 2:00, and a dual-meet best for Stumph by two seconds.

Another double win came by the way of Quintero, who won the 500 free in 4:26.14. He had to fend off freshman teammate Reed Malone, who was never more than eight tenths behind. Malone was second in a 4:26.72. Quintero has the top 500 time of the season so far, a 4:12.85 from the Texas Invitational. Malone’s 4:17.08 from the Texas Invite is eighth in the nation, and today’s swim is his fastest in a dual meet.

Davis took the win in his specialty, the 100 fly, with a 48.30, and Ipsen dominated once again, this time in the 3-meter event with 413.40 points.

Stanford’s Max Williamson and Offutt went 1-2 in the 400 IM, as Williamson posted a 3:53.56 to Offutt’s 3:57.18 as the only swims under four minutes.

Stanford closed out the meet with a close win in the 200 free relay, led by an incredible 19.96 leadoff leg from Nolan. It was the key to Stanford winning by 36 hundredths, 1:20.58 to 1:20.94.

Results For: USC men vs. Stanford

LOS ANGELES, California, February 8.
