BLOOMINGTON, Indiana, February 8. THE men\u2019s swimming and diving teams from Indiana and Purdue closed out the dual-meet phase of the 2013-2014 season with some close races in today\u2019s dual meet on the IU campus. Indiana\u2019s depth was too much for Purdue to handle, and the Hoosier beat the Boilermakers (score).<\/p>\n

After a close win in the 200 medley relay, 1:28.94 for Indiana with Purdue second in 1:29.30, Indiana dominated the next three events of the meet before finding themselves in tight battles in the next four. Jackson Miller won the 1000 free by nine seconds over Purdue\u2019s Grayson Smith, posting a 9:20.29 for the victory.<\/p>\n

Eric Ress led a 1-2 Hoosier finish in the 200 free, with his 1:37.68 well ahead of the 1:39.61 posted by Max Irwin. Purdue\u2019s Filip Bujoczek was third with a 1:39.74.<\/p>\n

James Wells handily won the 100 backstroke with the only sub-50 second swim of the day. His 47.67 beat out Purdue\u2019s Stephen Seliskar, who was second with a 50.08.<\/p>\n

Indiana\u2019s Cody Miller had his hands full with Purdue\u2019s Lyam Dias in the 100 breast, though Miller was able to get the win in 55.09 to Dias\u2019 55.54.<\/p>\n

Purdue\u2019s Guillermo Blanco, who has been having a superb second half of the season, almost won the 200 fly with a 1:46.95, but Indiana\u2019s Steven Schmuhl, an NCAA finalist in the 400 IM, got there first with a 1:46.77.<\/p>\n

The first two wins of the day for Purdue came in the 50 and 100 freestyles, as Danny Tuker posted a 20.13 in the 50 free and 44.74 in the 100 free. Indiana\u2019s Anze Tavcar was second in both races with times of 20.31 and 44.95.<\/p>\n

Ress and Schmuhl were back in the water for the 200 backstroke, and Ress was the clear winner with a 1:42.97. For the NCAA finalist, that\u2019s his second-fastest swim of the season, not far off the 1:41.58 he posted at the USA Swimming nationals. Schmuhl was second with a 1:46.16 to hold off Blanco of Purdue, who finished third with a 1:47.52.<\/p>\n

Dias got a bit of revenge on Cody Miller in the 200 breaststroke, taking the win in 2:00.81 to Miller\u2019s 2:01.19.<\/p>\n

Jackson Miller also picked up a double win, sweeping the distance freestyles with a 4:32.42 over Ress, who posted a 4:33.73. Joe Powell and Max Irwin led another Indiana 1-2 finish in the next event, the 100 fly, as Powell posted a 49.70 to Irwin\u2019s 49.72. Right behind them was Purdue\u2019s Austin Flager in third with a 49.79 and Seliskar with a 49.81 for fourth.<\/p>\n

Schmuhl wrapped up the individual events with a 1:47.47 in the 200 IM to lead a trio of swimmers who could potentially score points in the event at the NCAAs. Blanco was second with a 1:48.86 and Cody Miller was third with a 1:50.19.<\/p>\n

A monster 43.46 anchor leg from Tucker helped Purdue make up a 1.2-second deficit at the 300-yard mark and beat Indiana in the 400 free relay, 2:58.78 to 2:58.84.<\/p>\n

In diving, Darian Schmidt of Indiana dominated the 1-meter springboard event, posting a score of 397.95 points. The meet featured platform diving, atypical of a dual meet. That event was won by Indiana\u2019s Conor Murphy with 386.33 points.<\/p>\n
