The year brought a lot of exciting finishes in the pool, but it also brought the passing of many influential people in the aquatic sports world, whether swimming, diving, artistic swimming or water polo.<\/p>\n

Here is a look back on who the swimming community bid farewell to in 2021 \u2014 they will be missed.<\/p>\n

Ted Erickson, 93<\/strong><\/a>
\nTed Erikson was the first man to swim across Lake Michigan. He was inducted into the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame in 1978.<\/p>\n

Frank Elm, 92<\/strong><\/a>
\nFrank Elm was the head coach for the 1980 Olympic team and was a two-time Olympic assistant. He also was a longtime successful coach at Rutgers.<\/p>\n

Amman Jalmaani, 72<\/strong><\/a>
\nAmman Jalmaani was a three-time Olympic swimmer from the Philippines. He swam the breaststroke in the 1964 Olympics at age 15.<\/p>\n

David Jenkins, 31<\/strong><\/a>
\nDavid Jenkins was Swim England Diving Coach.<\/p>\n

Donald N. Miller, 78<\/strong><\/a>
\nDonald N. Miller was the founding coach of Shippensburg University Swimming in Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n

Deryk Snelling, 87<\/strong><\/a>
\nDeryk Snelling was a longtime legendary swimming coach in Canada.<\/p>\n

Dawn Bean, 94<\/strong><\/a>
\nDawn Bean was one of the pioneers of synchronized swimming.<\/p>\n

Joy Cushman, 98<\/strong><\/a>
\nJoy Chushman was one of the pioneers of synchronized swimming.<\/p>\n

George Wendt, 73<\/strong><\/a>
\nGeorge Wendt was the Chicago Masters Swim Club president and died from a heart attack during the Big Shoulders Open Water Swim Classic in Lake Michigan.<\/p>\n

Rich McGeagh, 77<\/strong><\/a>
\nRich McGeagh was an NCAA champion swimmer and made the U.S. Olympic team in 1964.<\/p>\n

Bill Wadley, 65<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Bill Wadley was a swimming coach at Ohio State and the ASCA Ceo. He died after battle with pancreatic cancer.<\/p>\n

Clifford Barry, 75<\/strong><\/a>
\nClifford Larry was a Canadian Olympian and more recently the coach of Victor Davis.<\/p>\n

Curtis Robinette, 41<\/strong><\/a>
\nLongtime Mercyhurst University Water Polo Coach Curtis Robinette died after a battle with cancer.<\/p>\n

Bob Chen<\/strong><\/a>
\nBob Chen was the Rio Salado Swim Club coach and the Chandler High School Swimming Coach.<\/p>\n

Herman Willemse, 87<\/strong><\/a>
\nHerman Willemse was a 2008 Honor Open Water Swimmer from the Netherlands.<\/p>\n

Coak Matthews, 66<\/strong><\/a>
\nCoak Matthews as the Henderson State swimming coach.<\/p>\n

Chad Hundeby, 50<\/strong><\/a>
\nChad Hundeby was an ISHOF Honor Open water swimmer. He died of a heart attack.<\/p>\n

Tim Welsh, 76<\/strong><\/a>
\nTim Welsh was a longtime Notre Dame swimming coach, who led the Fighting Irish for 30 years. He died after a battle with cancer.<\/p>\n

Lim Heng Chek, 85<\/strong><\/a>
\nLim Heng Chek was the first Olympic swimmer in the history of Malaysia.<\/p>\n

Georgy Prokopenko, 84<\/strong><\/a>
\nGeorgy Prokopenko was an Olympic silver medalist for the former Soviet Union. He participated in the 1960 and 1964 games.<\/p>\n

Ray Riordon, 87<\/strong><\/a>
\nRobert \u201cRay\u201d Riordon was the founder of the swimming program at Towson University.<\/p>\n

Nort Thornton, 87<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Suzanne Zimmerman, 95<\/strong><\/a>
\nSuzanne Zimmerman was a silver medalist in the 100 backstroke at the 1948 Olympics.<\/p>\n

Chase Smith, 19<\/strong><\/a>
\nIndiana swimmer Chase Smith died after a battle with cancer.<\/p>\n

Larry Rogers, 74<\/strong><\/a>
\nLarry Rogers was a longtime championship coach at Bellarmine Prep Swim and also coached water polo.<\/p>\n

Dick McDonough, 78<\/strong><\/a>
\nDick McDonough was an NCAA champion at Villanova and a world hchampion relay record holder.<\/p>\n

Clara Lamore Walker, 94<\/strong><\/a>
\nClara Lamore Walker was an Olympian in 1948 and a Masters Swimming Hall of Fame honoree.<\/p>\n

Janis Hape Dowd<\/strong><\/a>
\nJanis Hape Dowd was an Olympian in the 200 breaststroke in 1976. He died after a battle with cancer.<\/p>\n

Jorge Gonzalez, 75<\/strong><\/a>
\nJorge Gonzalez was one of the top and pioneering water polo players from Puerto Rico.<\/p>\n

Jack Cayco, 96<\/strong><\/a>
\nJack Cayco was an Olympian from the Philippines in 1958. He also won gold medals in the Asian Games.<\/p>\n

Bumpy Jones, 87<\/strong><\/a>
\nBurwell \u201cBumpy\u201d Jones was a Hall of Fame honor masters swimmer in 2005.<\/p>\n

Harry Hauck, 91<\/strong><\/a>
\nHaryy Hauck was a pioneering water polo figure who brought the sport to Puerto Rico.<\/p>\n

Srdjan Filipovic, 49<\/strong><\/a>
\nSrdjan Filipovic was the swimming coach for the Oman national team from Serbia.<\/p>\n

Bert Bell, 75<\/strong><\/a>
\nBert Bell was a titan in the Caribbean swimming community, coaching many athletes from the Bahamas in multiple sports.<\/p>\n
