BAKERSFIELD, California, February 6. THE California Golden Bears used today’s dual meet against Cal State-Bakersfield as a warm-up for tomorrow’s battle with Southern California, beating the Roadrunners 140-108.<\/p>\n
The word “warm-up” might be a bit misleading, as temperatures hovered in the mid-50s during the meet. But each team performed despite the chilly and cloudy weather, with Cal posting the top time in each event.<\/p>\n
After California went 1-2 in the meet’s opening event, the 200 medley relay, Long Gutierrez took the 1000 freestyle with a 9:22.66 ahead of CSUB’s Gabriel Bertrand, who posted a 9:41.15 as the only two under 10 minutes in the event today.<\/p>\n
Will Hamilton, looking to return to the top of the podium in the 200 fly at the NCAAs after winning in 2012, won the 200 free with a 1:39.82. Most notable about his win was his come-from-behind victory over distance ace Jeremy Bagshaw, who was second with a 1:39.91.<\/p>\n
With Cal’s backstroke duo of Ryan Murphy and Jacob Pebley sitting out the 100 back, that gave teammate Henry Chung the opportunity to win the event with a 51.52. Ryan Studebaker and Marcin Tarczynski went 1-2 for Cal in the 100 breast with times of 57.37 and 58.90, respectively.<\/p>\n
Gutierrez attempted to post a double win today, but settled for second in the 200 fly with a 1:57.17 behind Adam Hinshaw’s 1:52.32. The men’s 50 freestyle illustrated how much the weather affected performances, with Seth Stubblefield getting to the wall first with a 20.91. He’s been much faster this season, with two sub-20 second swims to his credit.<\/p>\n
Trent Williams got the win in the men’s 100 free with a 46.11, with Pebley second in 46.79. In the 200 back, multiple NCAA finalist Josh Prenot won with a 1:48.99, with Jeremy Bagshaw second in 1:49.11.<\/p>\n
Freshman Hunter Cobleigh got his first dual meet win with a 2:04.76 in the 200 breast, followed by Adam Hinshaw taking the 500 free with a 4:30.98.<\/p>\n
With the meet victory secured after the 500 free, Cal swam exhibition in the final three races. Ryan Murphy posted a 48.74 in the 100 fly for the top time in the event, but the first-place points went to CSUB’s Louis Wojciechowski, the younger brother of Michigan All-American John, who swam a 52.27.<\/p>\n
Dennis Cassidy officially won the 200 IM with a 2:02.77, though four Cal swimmers that could likely be point scorers in the event swam faster. Hamilton was fastest with a 1:49.23, Chuck Katis second in 1:50.27, Tarczynski third with a 1:50.90 and Pebley fourth with a 1:52.76.<\/p>\n
