INDIANAPOLIS, Feb. 8. THE 25th-ranked Indiana men's swimming team pulled out a close 127-116 victory over 18th ranked Purdue today. <\/p>\n

The Hoosiers finished the dual meet season with an 8-1 overall record, including a 4-1 Big Ten mark. It is Indiana's best dual meet record since 1982, when the Hoosiers finished 9-1 under the legendary Doc Counsilman.<\/p>\n

"I was so proud of the guys today," Indiana head coach Ray Looze, Jr. said. "It was really a bizarre meet in that everything that could go wrong did go wrong. We didn't start well at all. We didn't win the 400 medley relay like we wanted to, but from the 200 butterfly on we dominated. <\/p>\n

"(Purdue) was the better team coming in, they were the higher ranked, deeper and all that. We were fortunate to come away with a victory. The guys really dug deep and swam with a lot of heart. They got the job done today, and hopefully we can carry this momentum into the Big Ten Championships in three weeks."<\/p>\n

The Hoosiers start out slowly as Purdue won the 400 medley relay. The Hoosier team of junior Matt Leach, senior David Schulze, sophomore Murph Halasz and junior Claes Andersson finished second with a time of 3:20.75. Purdue's A relay won with a time of 3:17.69. <\/p>\n

The 200 IM was the most controversial event of the evening, as it appeared that two Boilermaker swimmers false started, but the event was not stopped. At the conclusion, the officials said the false start equipment malfunctioned, and if the meet were in doubt, the event would be re-swum at the end of the meet. The meet remained close throughout and when it was re-swum, Schulze and Halasz were able to go 2-3 to maintain the Hoosier lead and claim victory. Schulze went 1:51.93, while Halasz went 1:53.19. <\/p>\n

Sophomore Richard Bryant continued his dominance of the distance events as he won both the 500 free and 1000 free. In the 500 free, Bryant went 4:36.36, which was over two seconds better than the second place competitor. He was eight seconds better than his second place competition in the 1000 free as he went a season best 9:23.93. <\/p>\n

Halasz and Bryant combined to put the Hoosiers on a torrid streak in the 200 butterfly. Halasz claimed first with a time of 1:49.22, and Bryant followed him in at 1:51.21.<\/p>\n

Indiana got a lot of points from the diving events as the Hoosiers went 1-2-3 in the one-meter and 1-2 in the three-meter. Junior All-American Marc Carlton won both events as he scored 363.00 on the one-meter, which was a season high. Senior Adam Hazes was second in both events, while freshman Brian Mariano placed third on the one-meter. <\/p>\n

Junior Mike Payne won the 50 free with a time of 20.76. He then teamed with Andersson to go 1-2 in the 100 free. Andersson won the 100 free with a time of 45.98, while Payne was next at 46.74. <\/p>\n

The Hoosiers fell just short of winning the 400 free relay as Purdue's A squad edged Indiana's A by three tenths of a second. Indiana went a season-best 3:04.87 in the event. The team consisted of Payne, sophomore David Winck, freshman Kevin Swander and Andersson.<\/p>\n
