The American foursome of <strong>Katharine Berkoff, Emily Escobedo, Claire Curzan<\/strong> and <strong>Kate Douglass<\/strong> clocked in at 1:44.50. The Brazilian was first in 1:42.42, just .01 up on South Korea\u2019s Sunwoo Hwang. Second was <strong>Andrei Minakov<\/strong> in 49.60 with <strong>Youssef Ramadan<\/strong> of Egypt following.<\/p>\n<p>Sixteen swimmers advanced to semifinals. Barely among them was American <strong>Tom Shields,<\/strong> who went 50.57 seconds to finish 16th, just .22 ahead of <strong>Marcin Cieslak.<\/strong> You have to scroll much further to find <strong>Michael Andrew,<\/strong> who followed up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/michael-andrew-swims-disappointing-100-breast-in-first-races-since-olympics-at-short-course-worlds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a lackluster showing in the 100 breaststroke<\/a> by going 51.69. With the field thinned further at the 2021 FINA Short Course World Championships, it\u2019s more of the same.<\/p>\n<p>That didn\u2019t stop Russia\u2019s <strong>Svetlana Chimrova<\/strong> from taking the top seed in prelims in 2:05.12. Russia has two of the top three seeds, with <strong>Anastasiia Markova<\/strong> third.<\/p>\n<p>The favorite may yet be reigning Olympic champion <strong>Zhang Yufei,<\/strong> who is the second seed in 2:05.73. Minakov led off with a 21.04, and there might be tenths to gain in the back half with the women.<\/p>\n<p>Italy is the second seed, with <strong>Leonardo Deplano<\/strong> uncorking a 20.91 for the fastest split of the morning. Canada\u2019s <strong>Summer McIntosh<\/strong> grabbed the second seed in 8:13.37, setting a Canadian record in the process. She trashed the super-suited 8:19.99 that had stood since 2009 in the hands of <strong>Savannah King,<\/strong> set when McIntosh was 2.5 years old. <strong>Isabel Gose<\/strong> of Germany was third followed by Italy\u2019s <strong>Simona Quadarella,<\/strong> the top seed entering the event.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. pushed one of two swimmers through, <strong>Katie Grimes<\/strong> finished seventh in
