That men&#8217;s 400 saw Olympic gold medalist\u00a0<strong>Ahmed Hafnaoui<\/strong> finish 10th in prelims and out of the top eight, while Austria&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Felix Aubock<\/strong> took the top seed in 3:37.91. Aubock, who tied for fourth in the event at the Olympics, was followed closely by Olympic bronze medalist\u00a0<strong>Kieran Smith\u00a0<\/strong>of the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>Next up will be the women&#8217;s 200 free, which may be a closer dual than anticipated after Canada&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Rebecca Smith<\/strong> tied Olympic silver medalist\u00a0<strong>Siobhan Haughey<\/strong> of Hong Kong in prelims, and Smith will swim out of lane four in the final.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/results\/pdf\/2021-fina-short-course-world-championships-day-1-heat-sheet-international-elite-2021-12-16.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Check out the full heat sheet for the session here<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the men&#8217;s 200 fly,\u00a0<strong>Trenton Julian<\/strong> of the United States captured the top seed as he swims at any version of a World Championships for the first time. He and three other swimmers, South Africa&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Chad le Clos<\/strong>,\u00a0Switzerland&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Noe Ponti<\/strong> and Estonia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Kregor Zirk<\/strong>, all recorded 1:50s in the prelims.<\/p>\n<p>Italy&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Ilaria Cusinato<\/strong> claimed lane four for the women&#8217;s 400 IM final, with Canada&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Tessa Cieplucha<\/strong>, the USA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Melanie Margalis<\/strong> and Ireland&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Ellen Walshe\u00a0<\/strong>right behind her. Olympic silver medalist\u00a0<strong>Emma Weyant<\/strong> will be looming in lane eight.<\/p>\n<p>Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Daiya Seto<\/strong> will be the favorite in the men&#8217;s 200 IM final, but the USA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Carson Foster\u00a0<\/strong>finished just two tenths behind the Japanese star in prelims.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, day one of Short Course Worlds will conclude with the 400 freestyle relays.
