The meet was delayed from 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/without-full-athlete-buy-in-short-course-worlds-remain-a-secondary-championship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">most of the sport&#8217;s biggest names will be missing<\/a> in the aftermath of the Olympic and the ISL season, several will be in attendance to cap off the 2021 calendar year.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/results\/pdf\/2021-fina-short-course-world-championships-psych-sheet-international-elite-2021-12-16.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Check out the full psych sheet here<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Seven swimmers who won Olympic gold medals in Tokyo are entered in the meet: Tunisia&#8217;s <strong>Ahmed Hafnaoui\u00a0<\/strong>(men&#8217;s 400 freestyle), Canada&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Maggie MacNeil<\/strong> (men&#8217;s 100 butterfly), Great Britain&#8217;s <strong>Tom Dean<\/strong> (men&#8217;s 200 freestyle), the USA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Lydia Jacoby<\/strong> (women&#8217;s 100 breaststroke), China&#8217;s <strong>Zhang Yufei<\/strong> (women&#8217;s 200 butterfly), South Africa&#8217;s <strong>Tatjana Schoenmaker<\/strong> (women&#8217;s 200 breaststroke) and China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Wang Shun<\/strong> (men&#8217;s 200 IM).<\/p>\n<p>The list of Olympic medalists competing on the women&#8217;s side also includes Swedish superstar\u00a0<strong>Sarah Sjostrom<\/strong>, two-times silver medalist <strong>Siobhan Haughey<\/strong> of Hong Kong and <strong>Kylie Masse<\/strong> of Canada, China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Li Bingjie<\/strong>, Italy&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Simona Quadarella<\/strong> and American IMers\u00a0<strong>Kate Douglass\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Emma Weyant<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>For the men, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/kyle-chalmers-withdraws-from-short-course-world-championships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">100 freestyle Olympic silver medalist <strong>Kyle Chalmers\u00a0<\/strong>is out as he battles a shoulder injury<\/a>, but multi-time medalists\u00a0<strong>Duncan Scott<\/strong> of Great Britain, <strong>Kliment Kolesnikov <\/strong>of Russia and\u00a0<strong>Arno Kamminga\u00a0<\/strong>of the Netherlands lead the way. Distance stars\u00a0<strong>Florian Wellbrock<\/strong>, <strong>Mykhailo Romanchuk<\/strong> and <strong>Gregorio Paltrinieri <\/strong>will be in Abu Dhabi, and so will <strong>Nicolo Martinenghi<\/strong>, <strong>Kieran Smith<\/strong>, <strong>Fernando Scheffer<\/strong> and <strong>Noe Ponti<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Women&#8217;s short course world-record holders competing in their respective events include the Netherlands&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Ranomi Kromowidjojo\u00a0<\/strong>in the 50 free, the Netherlands&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Kira Toussaint<\/strong> in the 50 back and Jamaica&#8217;s <strong>Alia Atkinson<\/strong> in the 50 and 100 breast. Men&#8217;s record-holders entered include Paltrinieri in the 1500 free, Belarus&#8217; <strong>Ilya Shymanovich<\/strong> in the 100 and 200 breast, Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Daiya Seto<\/strong> in the 400 IM\u00a0and co-world-record holders <strong>Nicholas Santos<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Szebasztian Szabo<\/strong> in the 50 fly.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, Americans\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/coleman-stewart-cannot-understand-usa-swimmings-reasoning-for-short-course-worlds-snub\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Coleman Stewart<\/strong> (100 backstroke)<\/a> and\u00a0<strong>Kelsi Dahlia<\/strong> (100 butterfly) set new world records during this year&#8217;s ISL season, but neither is on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/results\/2021-fina-short-course-world-championship\/usa-senior-national\/2021\/October\/28?rtn=%2Fresults%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the American roster for Abu Dhabi<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike the long course World Championships, this meet will include semifinals of only 50 and 100-meter events, while 200-meter races go directly to finals. The meet also includes the same individual events program as the long course edition of Worlds except for the distance events, where the women&#8217;s 1500 free and men&#8217;s 800 free have not been added to the program (unlike at the Olympic Games).<\/p>\n<p>The meet also includes a whopping 12 relays: women and men will each compete in the 200, 400 and 800 freestyle relays and the 200 and 400 medley relays.
