﻿{"id":493124,"date":"2021-12-10T17:47:40","date_gmt":"2021-12-11T00:47:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=493124"},"modified":"2021-12-10T18:03:14","modified_gmt":"2021-12-11T01:03:14","slug":"titmus-test-for-an-excited-and-nervous-arnie-who-returns-to-brisbanes-crowded-house","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/titmus-test-for-an-excited-and-nervous-arnie-who-returns-to-brisbanes-crowded-house\/","title":{"rendered":"Titmus Test For An Excited And Nervous &#8216;Arnie&#8217; Who Returns to Brisbane\u2019s Crowded House"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Titmus Test For An Excited And Nervous \u201cArnie\u201d Who Returns to Brisbane\u2019s Crowded House <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of Australia\u2019s Tokyo golden girls <strong>Ariarne Titmus<\/strong> arrived at the Brisbane Aquatic Centre today and unlike her Olympic successes at a Games swum in empty Stadiums, the 21-year-old returned to racing in front of a crowded house.<\/p>\n<p>Titmus joined fellow Games gold medallists <strong>Zac Stubblety-Cook, Meg Harris, Mollie O\u2019Callaghan<\/strong> and <strong>Chelsea Hodges<\/strong> for the seven-day McDonald\u2019s Queensland State Championships which has attracted over 1600 individual competitors from 146 clubs, many who have found new homes in Queensland and South Australia in an unprecedented post-Olympic transfer rush.<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s State Relays session was a sellout with 1069 teams from 61 clubs with Titmus (St Peters Western) joining her teammates including <strong>Shayna Jack<\/strong> \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/banned-aussie-swimmer-shayna-jack-makes-long-awaited-return-to-racing-at-queensland-state-championships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">resuming racing<\/a> after a two-and-a-half-year lay off after a positive doping violation, before her full book of freestyle races from 50m through 1500m.<\/p>\n<p>A vastly different story to swimming in front of the empty stands in Tokyo. The meet will run from today Saturday December 11 (AET) through December 17 with the major open finals set down for tomorrow Sunday December 12 through Tuesday December 14. I actually wanted to try and recover and to start and feel half normal again in the pool,\u201d said Titmus when she spoke at length with <em>Swimming World<\/em> after training in Brisbane this week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m excited to race again but I\u2019m also very nervous because I\u2019m not going to be swimming any fast times at all. I\u2019m so far off where I was and my expectations are very low.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And it comes after archrival Katie Ledecky\u2019s four wins at the US Open Meet last week in North Carolina including a new meet record of 4:00.51 in the 400m freestyle and one of her fastest ever 800s, a new US Open Meet record of 8:12.81 \u2013 just outside her gold medal time in Tokyo<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat Katie has done is just crazy&#8230;.I don\u2019t know how long she had out of the water but all I know is I needed a massive break after the Olympics, I\u2019ll be happy if I can swim a PB plus 10 in the 400m freestyle this week,\u201d said Titmus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u201dSo I\u2019m definitely at a different stage of my swimming at the moment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve taken it pretty slow, easing it back in; the past two years have been so full on.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI could not have imaged getting straight back into training&#8230;. or racing. I just needed that break&#8230;. even now I\u2019m still not ready mentally where I was at prior to the Olympics; I\u2019m still trying to enjoy swimming for what it is without much pressure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo for this week\u2019s racing there is no pressure on myself from my coach Dean Boxall or me and I wasn\u2019t expecting to swim fast now I want to be peaking for the middle of next year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The past four months have been really hectic post Toyko for Titmus \u2013 with her return coinciding with a major Ashes Cricket Series between Australia and England that kicked off this week in her home town Brisbane &#8211; the 2032 Olympic city.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first two months when I wasn\u2019t swimming after coming home from the Olympics was just so full on,\u201d said Titmus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne or two or even more commitments every day&#8230;speaking events, virtual speaking events, media opportunities, photo shoots, dinners, lunches, doing just about everything I could while I had that spare time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd managing that after being back in the pool was really challenging but I think I handled that really well and the past two weeks I\u2019ve pretty much cleared my calendar because I\u2019m racing this weekend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI actually wanted to try and recover and to start and feel half normal again in the pool.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel like I\u2019m very refreshed. I\u2019ve still got to manage the load. So if my shoulder\u2019s holding up I\u2019ll definitely swim the 1500m&#8230;I\u2019m not expecting too much..<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will be more of a training swim really&#8230;.that\u2019s why (our St Peters Western Squad) are all racing so many events&#8230;.to keep our volume up&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDean has us entered in all the relays&#8230;.as well&#8230;.it\u2019s going to be full on competition&#8230;.50, 100, 200, 400, 800 and 1500m&#8230;Dean has made everyone in the program swim 1500m ..<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s not expecting us to go amazing; just build the 500s..doing it as a team (bonding) thing &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo be truthful I hate the 1500m. That\u2019s going to be a once in a while meet that I get to experience this.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m looking forward to that and because of the number of races we\u2019re doing there isn\u2019t the expectation on times.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just about getting in there and doing your best and seeing where you are at.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know my swimming isn\u2019t at the level that it usually is&#8230;I\u2019m just excited to have fun while racing&#8230;.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Changing Lanes On Coaching Roundabout<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Individual 400IM bronze medallist <strong>Brendon Smith<\/strong> (Nunawading, VIC) is the latest who is preparing to re-locate to SE Queensland) and relay bronze medallists <strong>Brianna Throssell <\/strong>and <strong>Tamsin Cook<\/strong> (who have transferred form UWA West Coast\/WA to USC Spartans), <strong>Isaac Cooper<\/strong> and <strong>Tommy Neill<\/strong> (Centenary Rackley) have entered in the meet.<\/p>\n<p>Smith is believed to be tossing up a move to either <strong>Michael Bohl <\/strong>(Griffith Uni) or <strong>Vince Raleigh <\/strong>(Chandler).<\/p>\n<p>Throssell and Cook are leading a transfer list with the Olympic medallists following their newly appointed USC Spartans head coach <strong>Mick Palfrey<\/strong>.
