He holds the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/david-popovici-breaks-wjr-to-win-gold-at-european-junior-championships-anastasiia-markova-sets-championship-record\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">world junior record in the men\u2019s 100 free<\/a> (47.30 seconds) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/olympics-sunwoo-hwang-sets-wjr-in-200-freestyle-at-front-of-youth-movement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">second-fastest in the men\u2019s 200 free<\/a> (1:44.68). His times rank in the top 15 all-time.<\/p>\n<p>He swept the 50, 100 and 200 free at the European Junior Championships just before the Tokyo Games. He will continue his season at the World Short Course Championships in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, in December.<\/p>\n<p>The native of Bucharest started swimming at a young age as a health measure to correct minor spine deformities. He\u2019s been training with coach <strong>Adrian Radulescu<\/strong> since he was nine years old, and the results have been outstanding. He\u2019s a multi-time senior national champion and holds three national records (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/david-popovici-romanias-rising-teenage-star-sets-two-national-records-at-world-cup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">two long-course<\/a>, one short-course). He has the potential to be a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/david-popovici-the-boy-who-might-be-king-full-article\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">paradigm-shifting swimmer with his refined style of sprinting<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re obviously very excited that David will be joining our Elite Team,\u201d arena deputy CEO <strong>Giuseppe Musciacchio<\/strong> said. \u201cHe\u2019s doing things as a 17-year-old that today\u2019s champions weren\u2019t getting close to, so we\u2019re thrilled to be part of the support group that will help to nurture him carefully so that he matures at the right pace to fully realize his unique talent.
