The game featured 10 ties.<\/p>\n<p>USC (18-3) led 9-7 on <strong>Hannes Daube\u2019s<\/strong> goal with 4:28 left in the third quarter. The Trojans took the lead three times in the fourth quarter. But <strong>Jack Deely<\/strong> knotted the game with 2:12 to play, and the Golden Bears forced a USC turnover with 2:12 to play. It\u2019s coach <strong>Kirk Everist\u2019s<\/strong> fourth title in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/catching-up-with-cal-water-polos-kirk-everist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">20 seasons in charge in Berkeley<\/a>. Cal had beaten UCLA, 15-13, in overtime of the semifinal, thanks to six goals from <strong>Max Casabella.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That was a great game with two incredibly talented teams,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/calbears.com\/news\/2021\/12\/5\/mens-water-polo-national-champions.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Everist said.<\/a> &#8220;Fortunately for us, we were able to make a couple of more plays here and there. I really enjoyed just watching the teams go and battle.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Deely scored twice and added two assists for Cal (22-4). Casabella tallied four goals and two assists, Roberto Valera notched a hat trick and <strong>Nikolaos Papanikolaou<\/strong> added two goals and a team-high nine deflections. Molthen tallied a hat trick and an assist. <strong>Wyatt Barker<\/strong> added two goals, four deflections and two steals, and <strong>Jacob Mercep<\/strong> paired a goal with three assists and four deflections. <strong>Nic Porter<\/strong> made eight saves and three steals in net.<\/p>\n<p>Papanikolaou was named to the MVP of the NCAA Championship.
