Her time of 4:00.51 undercut the record she set two years ago in Atlanta (4:00.81).<\/p>\n<p>Second in the race was <strong>Erin Gemmell,<\/strong> swimming for Ledecky\u2019s former club Nation\u2019s Capital Aquatic in 4:10.12. Scottsdale Aquatic Club\u2019s <strong>Sierra Schmidt<\/strong> was third in 4:12.53, just two tenths ahead of Canadian Olympian <strong>Katrina Bellio<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Ledecky lowered her U.S. Open record <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/katie-ledecky-starts-u-s-open-with-victory-in-800-freestyle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in winning the 800 free Wednesday night<\/a>, going 8:12.81, a time that slots into her stranglehold of the 24 fastest times in history.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaswimming.org\/event\/2021\/12\/01\/default-calendar\/toyota-u.s.-open\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. Open Meet Information<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ledecky finished second in the 400 free in Tokyo to Australia\u2019s <strong>Ariarne Titmus.<\/strong> Titmus went 3:56.69 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/olympics-in-epic-showdown-ariarne-titmus-dispatches-katie-ledecky-to-become-aussie-golden-girl-updated\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to win that Olympic duel<\/a>, with Ledecky earning silver in 3:57.36. Ledecky holds the Olympic record from her gold-winning performance in Rio in 2016 at 3:56.46, which stands as the world record. Smith, who didn\u2019t qualify for the Tokyo Olympics, got the win in her first major meet for Longhorn Aquatics.
