Luke Hobson Goes 4:12.12, Downs Michael Phelps\u2019 500 Free NAG at Minnesota Invitational <\/strong><\/p>\n

University of Texas freshman Luke Hobson<\/strong> took down a national age-group record belonging to Michael Phelps<\/strong> Thursday morning.<\/p>\n

Hobson went 4:12.12 to take the top seed in the men\u2019s 500 freestyle at the Minnesota Invitational. That\u2019s the fastest 17-18 time in American history. It undercuts the 4:12.33 that Phelps set as the NAG record<\/a> in 2004 for North Baltimore Aquatic Club.<\/p>\n

Hobson\u2019s morning splits:<\/p>\n

Hobson has used the meet as an introduction to the wider college swimmer world. He split 1:31.34 in the 800 free relay on the meet’s first night Wednesday<\/a>, swimming (likely for the last time) on the Longhorns B relay. That squad finished in 6:11.72. The winner Longhorns A squad holds the fastest time in the country at 6:10.14.<\/p>\n
