Mardini and the other are part of the non-governmental organization, the Emergency Response Center International (ERCI), that operated from 2016-18 on the Greek island. They face up to 25 years in prison for charges of state secret espionage, smuggling and money laundering.<\/p>\n<p>Amnesty International has decried the charges as \u201cunfair and baseless.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"fr\">&#8220;Trafic de migrants\u201d, \u201cespionnage\u201d, \u201cblanchiment d\u2019argent\u201d&#8230; Sarah Mardini, une r\u00e9fugi\u00e9e syrienne devenue sauveteuse et 23 autres b\u00e9n\u00e9voles, risquent jusqu\u2019\u00e0 25 ans de prison pour avoir tent\u00e9 de sauver la vie d&#8217;exil\u00e9\u00b7e\u00b7s en M\u00e9diterran\u00e9e : <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/a1obpRTMOB\">pic.twitter.com\/a1obpRTMOB<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 AJ+ fran\u00e7ais (@ajplusfrancais) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ajplusfrancais\/status\/1461651969232101376?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 19, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Mardini gained international fame along with her sister Yusra, when the two youth swimmers from Darayya helped swim to safety a stricken dingy in the Aegean Sea. The duo swam for some three hours before reaching Lesbos in 2015, saving a boat made for six to seven occupants that was loaded with 18. Yusra Mardini settled in Germany, and she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/swimmer-changing-global-perceptions-of-refugees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">competed for the Refugee Olympic Team<\/a> at both the 2016 Rio Olympics and 2021 Tokyo Olympics. Their journey from Syria to Europe is being turned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/netflix-starts-production-on-the-swimmers-rare-on-screen-look-at-the-sport\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">into a movie called, \u201cThe Swimmers.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sara Mardini returned to Lesbos in 2018. She and an Irish rescue diver, <strong>Sean Binder, <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2021\/nov\/14\/on-trial-for-saving-lives-the-young-refugee-activist-facing-a-greek-court\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">volunteered to help save immigrants<\/a> attempting the dangerous passage through the Mediterranean. They were detained for 100 days in late 2018. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/news\/syria-europe-sarah-mardini-refugee-greece-trial\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mardini discussed her ordeal with Middle East Eye<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The charges have been criticized as motivated by animus against refuges and asylum seekers. Journalists are also <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/katymfallon\/status\/1461239067534938117\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">being kept away from the trial<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Greek authorities\u2019 misuse of the criminal justice system to harass these humanitarian rescuers seems designed to deter future rescue efforts, which will only put lives at risk,\u201d <strong>Bill Van Esveld,<\/strong> associate children\u2019s rights director at Human Rights Watch, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2021\/11\/17\/activists-in-greece-face-charges-for-assisting-incoming-refugees\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told Al Jazeera<\/a>. \u201cThe slipshod investigation and absurd charges, including espionage, against people engaged in life-saving work reeks of politically motivated prosecution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A lawyer for Mardini and Binder has submitted what he called, \u201csolid evidence,\u201d of ERCI\u2019s communication with port police.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the way that they chose three years ago in order to send away humanitarians and NGOs from the islands and they achieved it,\u201d the lawyer, <strong>Zacharias Kesses<\/strong>, said. \u201cThis case was very high profile as the first time that volunteers were imprisoned
