The Buckeyes and Hoosiers posted several impressive performances, including a session-opening 1:35.28 showing in the 200-yard medley relay. Ohio State was boosted by the combined efforts of <strong>Emily Crane<\/strong>, <strong>Hannah Bach<\/strong>, <strong>Katherine Zenick<\/strong> and <strong>Amy Fulmer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>A tight finish in the men\u2019s medley relay saw Ohio State get to the wall first. The foursome of <strong>Hunter Armstrong<\/strong>, <strong>Hudson McDaniel<\/strong>, <strong>Alex Quach<\/strong> and <strong>Ruslan Gaziev<\/strong> registered a time of 1:24.24, which edged a pair of Indiana squads. The Hoosiers, in a demonstration of their depth, went second and third behind respective swims of 1:24.32 and 1:24.57.<\/p>\n<p>Bach and Zenick handed the Ohio State women individual triumphs. While Zenick was quickest in the 100 butterfly in 51.65, Bach had no trouble winning the 100 breaststroke. Bach went an impressive 58.08 to prevail by more than a second. Crane just missed a win for the Buckeyes in the 100 backstroke, as her 51.94 was a hundredth back of the 51.93 by Kentucky\u2019s <strong>Caitlin Brooks<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ohio-state-invitational-day-1-buckeye-lead-womens-meet-indiana-men-lead\/\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Day One Recap<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Indiana duo of <strong>Rafael Miroslaw<\/strong> and <strong>Brendan Burns<\/strong> engaged in a down-to-the-wire battle in the men\u2019s 200 freestyle. Miroslaw overtook Burns on the last 50 yards to win in 1:33.00, with Burns following in 1:33.04. Third place went to Gaziev, who went 1:33.20. Miroslaw and Burns took care of the first two legs on Indiana&#8217;s winning 800 freestyle relay (6:17.27).<\/p>\n<p>In the men\u2019s 100 backstroke, <strong>Gabriel Fantoni<\/strong> notched a meet record of 45.20 to beat Armstrong, the U.S. Olympian who touched in second place in 45.82. Fantoni was also second in the 100 butterfly, as his time of 45.91 was behind the 45.10 of Virginia Tech\u2019s <strong>Youssef<\/strong> <strong>Ramadan<\/strong>, who was 44.64 in prelims.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gillian Davey<\/strong> (4:06.34) and <strong>Bailey Bonnett<\/strong> (4:06.96) handed Kentucky a 1-2 finish in the 400 individual medley, where five women cracked the 4:09 barrier. On the men\u2019s side, Indiana\u2019s <strong>Mikey Calvillo<\/strong> (3:46.23) and <strong>Tristan Dewitt<\/strong> (3:46.32) took the top spots in the 400 individual medley, with Calvillo passing his teammate on the last 50. Kentucky also received a win from <strong>Riley Gaines<\/strong>, whose mark of 1:43.81 was fastest in the 200 freestyle. She also helped Kentucky win the 800 freestyle relay in 7:03.45.<\/p>\n<p>Pittsburgh\u2019s <strong>Cooper Van Der Laan<\/strong> finished first in the men\u2019s 100 breaststroke in 51.46, just off the 51.42 he managed during prelims.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ohio State Invitational: OSU, Indiana Put Up Quick Performances;
