{"id":491453,"date":"2021-11-16T13:49:25","date_gmt":"2021-11-16T20:49:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=491453"},"modified":"2021-11-16T13:49:25","modified_gmt":"2021-11-16T20:49:25","slug":"allegations-of-abuse-levied-by-laszlo-cseh-others-at-hungarian-coach-gyorgy-turi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/allegations-of-abuse-levied-by-laszlo-cseh-others-at-hungarian-coach-gyorgy-turi\/","title":{"rendered":"Allegations of Abuse Levied by Laszlo Cseh, Others at Hungarian Coach Gyorgy Turi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Allegations of Abuse Levied by Laszlo Cseh, Others at Hungarian Coach Gyorgy Turi<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hungarian swimming is dealing with a crisis after <strong>Laszlo Cseh,<\/strong> the five-time Olympian, leveled charges of an abusive training environment at former coach <strong>Gyorgy Turi.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cseh\u2019s revelations led others to come forward, and Turi, known on deck as \u201cthe Tsar,\u201d has acknowledged some of the criticism, though he&#8217;s denied any abuse or sexual wrongdoing.<\/p>\n<p>The first reports stemmed from an interview Cseh did with <a href=\"https:\/\/24.hu\/sport\/2021\/10\/29\/cseh-laszlo-uszas-turi-gyorgy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">24.Hu Sport in late October<\/a>. The five-time Olympian and six-time medalist retired after the Tokyo Games. He\u2019ll turn 36 in December.<\/p>\n<p>The interview touched on his work with Turi, who had coached him until 2015 at Kobanya SC. He called Turi\u2019s methods, \u201cnot the most modern,\u201d emphasizing the way in which Turi thought the most effective way to train was to break athletes down mentally and physically.<\/p>\n<p>Cseh, <a href=\"https:\/\/hungarytoday.hu\/swimming-coach-gyorgy-turi-sexual-abuse-training-physical-punishment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">as translated by<\/a> <em>Hungary Today,<\/em> said that, \u201cnot a single training session went by without someone crying. Then came the yelling, the punishments. Being hit with a stick while tying a rubber band for a training exercise. \u2026 But worse than that was the mental and psychological terror.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Part of the impetus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/laszlo-cseh-5-time-olympic-medalist-announces-coaching-change\/\">for the switch was Cseh training in the U.S.<\/a> in late 2014 and seeing that there was a different way to do things, \u201ca bolt of lightning\u201d moment that he needed to switch. (When asked, for instance, if anything would\u2019ve changed had he been born in America instead of Hungary, Cseh replied that he would\u2019ve still been a swimmer but would\u2019ve been, \u201cless mentally injured.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>Others have since come forward. <strong>Dominik Kozma,<\/strong> who swam in three Olympics and trained at Kobanya until 2014, said he saw Turi pull kids out of the pool by their hair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, in most places they don&#8217;t raise swimmers as soldiers,&#8221; Kozma <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blikk.hu\/sport\/egyeni\/hajanal-fogva-uszas-kozma-dominik-cseh-laszlo\/1cqdvyt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told Blikk<\/a>. He expressed concern over the \u201cthousands of children\u201d that Turi has worked with and the costs of his methods on those that didn\u2019t have the success of pupils like Cseh, <strong>Krisztina Egerszegi<\/strong> or the 14 other Olympians attributed to Turi. <strong>Noemi Kiss,<\/strong> who trained with Egerszegi, also attested to Turi\u2019s abusive practices, while several female swimmers detailed a culture of sexual harassment and <a href=\"https:\/\/index.hu\/sport\/2021\/11\/09\/-turi-maga-melle-ultetett-es-elkezdte-csokolgatni-a-nyakam-\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unwanted sexual advances<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Turi spoke to <a href=\"https:\/\/24.hu\/sport\/2021\/11\/11\/turi-gyorgy-cseh-laszlo-uszas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">24.Hu Sport last week in his defense<\/a>. He did admit some harsh tendencies in his approach, but he emphasized that he parted ways with many swimmers on good terms and denied any sexual allegations. (Turi was also an assistant for long-time national team coach <strong>Laszlo Kiss, <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/hungarian-swim-coach-laszlo-kiss-resigns-following-1962-rape-conviction-revelation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">who resigned in 2016 after a rape conviction in the 1960s was revealed<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>According to <em>Hungary Today<\/em>, the Hungarian Swimming Federation (MUSZ) has set up a five-person committee to investigation the allegations. In the interim, Turi has been suspended from his roles as the MUSZ\u2019s vice chair and the president of its coaches\u2019 committee. MUSZ officials have stressed that they have implemented measures against child and athletes abuse previous to these allegations. Turi\u2019s place with Kobanya SC <a href=\"https:\/\/24.hu\/sport\/2021\/11\/10\/kobanya-sc-turi-gyorgy-lelki-terror-veres-elnoksegi-ules\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">is also reportedly
