THE University of Virginia and North Carolina State University swimming and diving teams swam to a split in their dual meets yesterday afternoon, with the Virginia women and NC State men coming out on top. Leah Smith (500 and 1000 free), Courtney Bartholomew (100 and 200 back), Brad Phillips (500 and 1000 free), Shaun Casey (200 fly and 400 IM) and JB Kolod (1- and 3-meter diving) all won two individual events for the Cavaliers, while NC State&#8217;s Jonathan Boffa (100 and 200 free) and Christian McCurdy (200 fly and 400 IM) recorded two victories each.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Virginia Press Release<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Virginia women\u2019s swimming and diving team defeated ACC rival NC State, 178.5-115.5, Saturday (Feb. 1) at Casey Aquatic Center, while the men fell to the Wolfpack, 157-141. The No. 7 Cavalier women improved to 10-1 on the season, while the No. 20 men fell to 5-5.<\/p>\n<p>Freshman Leah Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa.) swept the women\u2019s distance events, including times of 4:47.56 in the 500 free and 9:45.66 in the 1,000 free. Sophomore Hanne Borgersen (Frederick, Md.) and senior Rachel Naurath (Manakin-Sabot, Va.) finished second and third in the 500 and senior Caroline Kenney (Suwanee, Ga.) and junior Kelly Offutt (Reisterstown, Md.) completed the 1-2-3 sweep in the 1,000.<\/p>\n<p>Sophomore Courtney Bartholomew (Holland, Mich.) swept the backstroke events, including the 100 (53.54) and 200 (1:56.48), while junior Shaun Casey (Port Orange, Fla.) claimed the 400 IM (4:20.57) and 200 fly (2:00.61).<\/p>\n<p>Naurath picked up a win in the 200 free (1:50.21), just ahead of junior Ellen Williamson (Ft. Mitchell, Ky. \u2013 1:50.75) and Borgersen (1:51.05). Freshman Laura Simon (Simmern, Germany) touched first in the 200 breast in 2:16.29.<\/p>\n<p>On the men\u2019s side, seniors Brad Phillips (Herndon, Va.) and Jan Daniec (Mission Viejo, Calif.) went 1-2 in both the 500 free (4:28.68 and 4:29.29) and 1,000 free (9:15.70 and 9:15.76). Sophomore Rodney Fentress (Virginia Beach, Va.) completed the UVa sweep in the 1,000, placing third in 9:22.28.<br \/>\nSophomore Luke Papendick (Kinnelon, N.J.) won the 200 back in 1:45.76, while classmate Yannick Kaeser (Mumpf, Switzerland) claimed the 200 breast in 2:00.84, just ahead of senior Taylor Grey (Williston, Vt.) in 2:01.23.<\/p>\n<p>On the women\u2019s diving boards, sophomores Becca Corbett (Louisville, Ky.) and Katie Warburg (Wilton, Conn.) each picked up a first and second-place finish. Corbett won the 1-meter event (271.05), while Warburg placed first on the 3-meter boards (290.63).<\/p>\n<p>In men\u2019s diving, junior JB Kolod (Pittsburgh, Pa.) earned 339.0 points on the 1-meter boards and 386.02 on the 3-meter boards to pick up two wins. Sophomores Carl Buergler (Arlington, Va.) and Jordan Sacks (Wilmette, Ill.) completed the UVa 1-2-3 sweep on the 3-meter boards, scoring 384.07 and 326.33 points, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>The Cavaliers return to action next weekend when they host Pitt on Feb. 8 at the Aquatic and Fitness Center. Diving action will commence at 9:30 a.m., with swimming scheduled to start at 12:30 p.m. Virginia\u2019s 20 seniors will be honored in a ceremony in between the diving and swimming at noon.<\/p>\n<p><strong>North Carolina State Press Release<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The No. 21 NC State men\u2019s swimming &amp; diving team captured a victory against No. 20 Virginia on Saturday afternoon at the Willis R. Casey Aquatic Center. The men defeated the Cavaliers by a final of 157-141, while the 21st-ranked women\u2019s team fell to the Cavs, 178.5-115.5.<\/p>\n<p>The men\u2019s squad finishes its home slate with a perfect 4-0 record and improves to 5-5 on the season, while the women\u2019s team now owns a 6-5 ledger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought we were emotionally ready to go after a tough day yesterday,\u201d said head coach Braden Holloway. \u201cIt was our senior day, so I knew it would be emotional. We had a lot of people step up for us today, including people other than the seniors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Wolfpack picked up a sweep in the relay events for the second consecutive meet and earned 12 individual victories.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am especially happy for the guys today,\u201d Holloway said. \u201cIt was a senior-led day and that was a big win for the guys.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>State started the meet by winning the men\u2019s and women\u2019s 200 medley relay. On the women\u2019s side, the team of Zina Grogg, Lauren Poli, Ashlyn Koletic and Riki Bonnema finished first with a time of 1:40.51. The men\u2019s squad posted a one-two finish in the event, with the quartet of Andreas Schiellerup, Ian Bishop, Barrett Miesfeld and David Williams posting a first-place finish in a time of 1:28.60.<\/p>\n<p>Boffa and sophomore Christian McCurdy paced the men\u2019s squad with two victories in individual events.<\/p>\n<p>A senior from Verona, Italy, Boffa won his first event of the day in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:37.72.<\/p>\n<p>Boffa, who was competing in the final home meet of his career, picked up his second win of the day in the 100 freestyle with a time of 44.80, as the Pack swept the event with a one-two-three finish. Simonas Bilis finished second in the event with a time of 45.31, while Scott Johnson tapped the wall in 45.79 to finish third.<\/p>\n<p>Other seniors to earn victories in their final home meet included Miesfeld in the 100 butterfly with a time of 47.10 and Bishop in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 54.75.<\/p>\n<p>The men\u2019s squad concluded the meet by posting a one-two finish in the 200 freestyle relay. The quartet of Bilis, Boffa, Schiellerup and Williams finished first overall after tapping the wall in 1:19.60.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe build our program around sprinters,\u201d Holloway said. \u201cSprinting for us comes first, because of the points. The points are so big. It\u2019s not just the points, but it\u2019s the energy that the relays create for the entire group. Our sprinters are a very dynamic bunch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the women\u2019s side, Grogg captured a victory in her final home meet in the 100 butterfly with a time of 54.82.<\/p>\n<p>Hannah Freyman posted a victory in the 100 free with a time of 50.89, while Bonnema tapped the wall first in the 50 free with a time of 23.12. In addition, Kayla Brumbaum finished first in the 100 breast with a time of 1:02.68.<\/p>\n<p>The women\u2019s team concluded the meet by posting a first-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay, as the team of Poli, Koletic, Natalie Labonge and Bonnema finished in a time of 1:30.86.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ladies are getting better and better,\u201d Holloway said. \u201cThat is the best team in the ACC that they\u2019re going head-to-head against.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In diving, Grant Saale posted a score of 325.20 in the men&#8217;s three-meter competition, while Gabrielle McDermott scored a 241.35 in the women&#8217;s one-meter competition.<\/p>\n<p>The Pack honored its 13 seniors on the roster prior to the start of the meet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose seniors started their career with a different coaching staff,\u201d Holloway said. \u201cThey wanted change and wanted something that was new and now everything is different. They\u2019re a good group. They\u2019re all very different and we\u2019re going to miss them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Up next, the women\u2019s squad and men\u2019s divers will travel to Greensboro, N.C. to participate in the ACC Championships from Feb. 19-22.
