In our last poll, we wanted to know: <strong>Who will win the Breakout Performer of the Year award at Golden Goggles?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The nominees for the award were\u00a0<strong>Bobby Finke<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Katie Grimes<\/strong>, <strong>Lydia Jacoby<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Emma Weyant<\/strong>. Each of these swimmers pulled off memorable performances during the summer of 2021. Finke was a favorite to qualify for the U.S. Olympic team and a medal contender heading into Tokyo in the 800 free and 1500 free, but he stunned the world with breathtaking comeback finishes to win gold in both races at the Olympics.<\/p>\n<p>Grimes, just 15 years old, barely missed winning an Olympic medal as she placed fourth in the women&#8217;s 800 free in the Tokyo final, but she shocked the world just to make the team, dropping more than 10 seconds in the event to edge out veteran\u00a0<strong>Haley Anderson<\/strong> and qualify for the Olympics. Jacoby was another surprising Olympic qualifier as she only emerged onto the scene a few months prior to Olympic Trials, but she swam past world-record holder\u00a0<strong>Lilly King<\/strong> and Olympic-record holder\u00a0<strong>Tatjana Schoenmaker<\/strong> in the 100 breast Olympic final to put up another gold medal.
