{"id":490420,"date":"2021-11-02T13:49:04","date_gmt":"2021-11-02T20:49:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=490420"},"modified":"2021-11-02T13:49:04","modified_gmt":"2021-11-02T20:49:04","slug":"matthew-sates-emma-mckeon-crowned-2021-fina-world-cup-champs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/matthew-sates-emma-mckeon-crowned-2021-fina-world-cup-champs\/","title":{"rendered":"Matthew Sates, Emma McKeon Crowned 2021 FINA World Cup Champs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Matthew Sates, Emma McKeon Crowned 2021 FINA World Cup Champs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>South Africa\u2019s <strong>Matthew Sates<\/strong> and Australian <strong>Emma McKeon<\/strong> were crowed the top point-getters at the 2021 FINA World Cup.<\/p>\n<p>The duo were the high scorers in each gender over the World Cup stops this fall, in Berlin, Budapest, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/star-powered-field-on-tap-as-fina-world-cup-set-for-move-to-doha\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Doha<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/fina-world-cup-daiya-seto-and-emma-mckeon-post-doubles-to-close-kazan-stop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kazan<\/a>. Over the four legs of the event, FINA awarded $1.452 million. A total of 1,021 athletes (590 men, 431 women) competed, representing 57 national federations and five continents.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/meet\/2021-fina-world-cup\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021 FINA World Cup coverage<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Sates and McKeon take home $100,000 each. McKeon was the overall top point-scorer at 228.3 points. The Australian, who won seven medals at the Tokyo Olympics, narrowly outdistance <strong>Kira Toussaint<\/strong> of the Netherlands, who tallied 227.4. Third place went to McKeon\u2019s countrywoman <strong>Madison Wilson<\/strong> (209.1). McKeon ($144,000) and Toussaint ($107,500) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fina.org\/competitions\/1383\/fina-swimming-world-cup-2021\/rankings?scoringId=3af19871-08a2-49a4-95a7-c4b161d366ed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">were the top prize winners<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On the men\u2019s side, Sates took the top spot with 227 points. He was followed by <strong>Tom Shields,<\/strong> who picked up 224.4 points. <strong>Arno Kamminga<\/strong> of the Netherlands accumulated 224.1 points for third. Those three were the tops on the money list, led by $140,000 for Sates and $103,500 for Shields.<\/p>\n<p>Sates also did the most damage on the record boards. He set three world junior records, taking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/matthew-sates-destroys-200-im-world-junior-record-at-fina-world-cup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">down the 200 individual medley<\/a> (1:51.45) and 200 freestyle (1:40.65) in Berlin, then the men\u2019s 400 free (3:37.92) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/2021-fina-world-cup-budapest-day-1-finals-live-recap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in Budapest<\/a>. The highlight, of course, was <strong>Kyle Chalmers\u2019<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/kyle-chalmers-blasts-world-record-in-scm-100-freestyle-video\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">world record in the men\u2019s 100 freestyle<\/a>, the Australian clocking in at 44.84 seconds in Kazan.<\/p>\n<p>The United States also set a world junior record in Berlin in the 200 mixed medley relay with the team of <strong>Quintin McCarty, Zhier Fan, Charlotte Hook<\/strong> and <strong>Kristina Peagle<\/strong> at 1:41.21.<\/p>\n<p>With Chalmers\u2019 world mark, a total of four FINA World Cup records fell. Toussaint set the standard in the women\u2019s 50 backstroke (25.81 seconds), McKeon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/2021-fina-world-cup-budapest-day-three-emma-mckeon-crushes-50-58-100-freestyle-moves-to-no-2-all-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in the 100 free<\/a> (50.58) and <strong>Daiya Seto<\/strong> of Japan rewrote <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/fina-world-cup-daiya-seto-sets-cup-record-in-200-im\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the 200 IM standard<\/a> (1:50.66).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Matthew Sates, Emma McKeon Crowned 2021 FINA World Cup Champs South Africa\u2019s Matthew Sates and Australian Emma McKeon were crowed the top point-getters at the 2021 FINA World Cup.
