NEW YORK, N.Y., Feb. 2. COLUMBIA used a late-meet surge to defeat Brown, 173-126, and Cornell, 233-66, in a double-dual meet today at Uris Pool. <\/p>\n
It was Columbia's first dual victory over the Bears since the 1992-93 season. The Lions improved to 7-2 overall and 3-2 in the Ivy League, equaling the most overall dual victories in the program's history. <\/p>\n
The first half of the meet was hotly contested. After four events, Columbia held a scant 37-36 advantage over the Bears. The Lions led 67-63 after seven events, and 88-80 after nine events. <\/p>\n
However, the Lions took control of the meet in the 200 back and the 200 breast. In the former event, Columbia finished first, second and fourth versus Brown, led by Emily Seidman (C-Cleveland Heights, Ohio) in 2:05.70, Cassie Herr (C-Carmel, Ind.) in 2:08.90, and Lauren Belive (B-Wayland, Mass.) in 2:10.81. <\/p>\n
The Lions swept the top three spots in the 200 breast, with Liz Swartwout (B-Hamden, Conn.) taking first in 2:23.79, followed by Susannah Knox (C-Montclair, N.J.) and Kathryn Alexander (C-Pittsfield, Mass.). <\/p>\n
Columbia opened the meet with a triumph in the 200 medley relay, as the team of Seidman, Alexander, Christina Kubacki (C-Oakville, Ont.) and Jessica Braun (C-Richmond, Va.) swam 1:48.30. Seidman went on to place first against both Brown and Cornell in the 100 back in 58.64. Alexander and Swartwout finished one-two in the 100 breast in 1:06.42 and 1:06.97, respectively. <\/p>\n
Lucy Eccleston (B-Stockton, Calif.) was first overall in the 200 fly in 2:07.24. Cathy Kenworthy (C-Reston, Va.) won the 500 free in 5:07.92, and Kubacki was fastest in the 100 fly in 58.59. <\/p>\n
The Lions had received a big boost from the divers' outings the previous day. The one- and three-meter events had been held Friday evening and, led by Grace Coyle's (C-Tannersville, Pa.) school record on the high board, Columbia had built a 30-8 advantage over Brown.
