She cited financial rewards she has earned from her swimming as well as crowdfunding as the seed to the foundation. Schoenmaker wants the foundation to be a \u201cGod centered foundation\u201d that gives back to those in her community. Schoenmaker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesouthafrican.com\/lifestyle\/celeb-news\/tatjana-schoenmaker-launches-her-own-foundation-swimming-olympics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reportedly raised<\/a> 1 million rand in three days.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">-TATJANA FOUNDATION-<\/p>\n<p>Finally launched! I hope that the foundation will be a shining light, a blessing to others just as I have been blessed and most importantly a God centred foundation (hence the middle \u2018t\u2019 being a cross) ??? <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/qIUWlvPQFX\">pic.twitter.com\/qIUWlvPQFX<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Tatjana Schoenmaker (@TRSchoenmaker) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TRSchoenmaker\/status\/1452684326064300036?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 25, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI already started from when I was young \u2013 I just wanted to give back. I think for me, it was always a dream but when it really became a reality was when I was blessed with the crowdfunding money and the support I got from South Africa,\u201d Schoenmaker <a href=\"https:\/\/supersport.com\/aquatics\/news\/211027_SAs_Olympic_star_looks_to_give_back_with_launch_of_Tatjana_Foundation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told SuperSport at a launch event<\/a>. \u201cObviously we need finances to help with this launch and to make a difference. I can use who I am as well, but finances are a big part and I\u2019m so grateful that they were able to bless me with the finances and now I can use it to bless someone else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of the early focuses is going to \u201cwater-related projects,\u201d but Schoenmaker indicated that it won\u2019t be limited to swimming or elite swimming. She identified access to water safety and swim lessons as an early possible avenue.<\/p>\n<p>Schoenmaker has a history of charity activities <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/trschoenmaker\/status\/1387449774761259010\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">through Pretoria-based Precious Blessings<\/a>, which provides abandoned or neglected children. The Johannesburg native has emphasized how important staying in South Africa was to her journey and she has offered support for other athletes who eschew going abroad to further their careers.<\/p>\n<p>Schoenmaker was one of the standout stars of the Tokyo Olympics. She won <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/olympics-tatjana-schoenmaker-supplies-first-individual-world-record-in-200-breast\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gold in the women\u2019s 200 breaststroke<\/a>, setting a world record of 2:18.95. It was the only women\u2019s individual world record of the Games. She also won silver in the 100 breaststroke. Her gold medal was the only one for South Africa at the Tokyo Olympics in all sports. She accounted for two of the nation&#8217;s three total medals.<\/p>\n<p>The Tatjana Foundation expands the 24-year-old&#8217;s legacy and is the seed of a plan for her post-swimming life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think for now it\u2019ll be paying for the swimming lessons and stuff like that,\u201d she said. \u201cAt the beginning, I won\u2019t be as involved physically because I\u2019m still swimming and I have a career. But that\u2019s why I want to get it started now so I can already make a difference.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen when I\u2019m done with swimming, I\u2019ll be able to be all hands on deck and really be part of it.
