{"id":489846,"date":"2021-10-24T00:33:13","date_gmt":"2021-10-24T07:33:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=489846"},"modified":"2021-10-24T08:00:05","modified_gmt":"2021-10-24T15:00:05","slug":"report-australian-swimming-league-left-floundering-as-founding-project-manager-convicted-of-tax-fraud","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/report-australian-swimming-league-left-floundering-as-founding-project-manager-convicted-of-tax-fraud\/","title":{"rendered":"REPORT: Australian Swimming League Left Floundering As Founding Project Manager \u201cConvicted of Tax Fraud\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>REPORT: Australian Swimming League Left Floundering As Founding Project Manager \u201cConvicted of Tax Fraud\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Australia enjoyed its best Olympics ever in the pool the state of the sport both domestically and internationally is undergoing a dramatic chain of events with troubling reports surfacing that continue to rock the sport.<\/p>\n<p>Hot on the heels of a threatened walk out by competitors contesting the International Swimming League (ISL) over money owed to teams and contractors comes more news today from the <em>The Age<\/em> and <em>Sun Herald<\/em> newspapers that Australia\u2019s own planned Swim League could well be struggling to stay afloat before it even gets to the starting blocks.<\/p>\n<p>The report claims that he project\u2019s founder and principal investor <strong>David Brandi,<\/strong> a prominent Melbourne business owner and property investor \u201cwas convicted of tax fraud and banned from serving as a company director.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brandi first approached Swimming Australia with the idea of a teams-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/australian-swimming-leagues-big-splash-plans-unveiled-on-eve-of-tokyo-olympics\/\">Australian Swimming league (ASL)<\/a> last year and it was launched before Tokyo and then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/launch-of-australian-swimming-league-asl-delayed-to-2022-by-covid-19\/\">delayed because of COVID<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Melbourne-based Brandi is serving a two-year, wholly suspended jail term after pleading guilty to dishonestly obtaining a gain from the Commonwealth. He was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/asic.gov.au\/about-asic\/news-centre\/find-a-media-release\/2021-releases\/21-206mr-victorian-director-disqualified-from-managing-corporations-for-five-years\/\">disqualified from managing a corporation for five years<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr Brandi\u2019s guilty plea was entered in the Victorian County Court on July 26 \u2014 seven days after Swimming Australia and the ASL issued a joint release announcing their \u201cground-breaking\u201d new league. It was originally planned to launch this month but has been postponed for 12 months,\u201d writes respected investigative reporter Chip Le Grande.<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s report in <em>The Age<\/em> and <em>Sun Herald<\/em> referred to \u201cThe International Swimming League, a professional competition founded three years ago by Ukranian-born billionaire Konstantin Grigorishin, serves as a cautionary tale about the pitfalls of sporting start-ups with the paper confirming that \u201cthe European-based ISL, already indebted to suppliers, still owes money to swimmers for last year\u2019s competition and unless those payments are met, the ISL could face a walk-out by competitors ahead of next month\u2019s finals series (in Eindhoven).<\/p>\n<p><a
