Hugo Gonzalez on Fire as Cal Men Dominate Utah<\/strong><\/p>\n

Cal senior\u00a0Hugo Gonzalez<\/strong> is one of the world’s most versatile swimmers, and he led his Golden Bears\u00a0to a dominant win at Utah Friday afternoon. Gonzalez was second in the 200 IM at last year’s NCAA championships and third in the 200 breaststroke, and while representing Spain, he won one medal of each color at the European Championships (gold in the 200 IM, silver in the 100 back, bronze in the 50 back). At the Tokyo Olympics, he placed sixth in the 100-meter back and was a semifinalist in the 200 IM.<\/p>\n

Similarly, he was all over the place in Salt Lake City. Gonzalez won the 100 back (48.08) and 200 breast (1:57.18), and he also contributed to wins in the 200 medley relay as the backstroker and on the anchor leg of the 400 free relay. Additionally, standouts\u00a0Trenton Julian<\/strong> (200 fly) and\u00a0Reece Whitley<\/strong> (100 breast) also claimed victories.<\/p>\n

Only half of the Cal squad was in action against Utah, with the other half scheduled to compete Saturday in the Pacific Invitational, but Cal still won with a score of 166-95. View full results here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

No. 2 California notched its second dual-meet win of the season and 16th in a row by defeating Utah, 166-95, at the Ute Natatorium on Friday. With Cal’s squad split into two cohorts this weekend, the Golden Bears used just 16 swimmers to earn the Pac-12 victory in Salt Lake City.<\/p>\n

Bookended by a pair of relay victories in the 200-yard medley relay and 400 freestyle relay, Cal saw eight different swimmers earn wins across 12 total individual events. Hugo Gonzalez<\/strong> paced the field with two individual wins in the 100 backstroke (48.08) and the 200 breaststroke (1:57.18), while leading off Cal’s 200 medley relay win (1:29.19) with a 22.53 backstroke split and swimming an anchor split of 43.57 on Cal’s 400 free relay win (2:59.53).<\/p>\n

Other individual wins were delivered by Gabriel Jett<\/strong> in the 1000 free (9:35.14), Reece Whitley<\/strong> in the 100 breast (54.54), Trenton Julian<\/strong> in the 200 butterfly (1:46.03), Bj\u00f6rn Seeliger<\/strong> in the 50 free (20.82), Jack Alexy<\/strong> in the 100 free (44.95), Colby Mefford<\/strong> in the 200 back (1:48.40) and Chris Jhong<\/strong> in the 400 individual medley (4:00.95).<\/p>\n

Gonzalez and Julian both posted NCAA “B” cuts in the 200 breast and 200 fly, respectively.<\/p>\n

Gonzalez, Julian and Seeliger swam on both of the winning relay quartets and were accompanied by Whitley (24.91 breaststroke split) on the 200 medley relay and Alexy (45.79 leadoff split) on the 400 free relay.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
