{"id":488734,"date":"2021-10-04T17:28:52","date_gmt":"2021-10-05T00:28:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=488734"},"modified":"2021-10-04T17:31:07","modified_gmt":"2021-10-05T00:31:07","slug":"mike-litzinger-resigns-from-notre-dame-retires-from-coaching","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/mike-litzinger-resigns-from-notre-dame-retires-from-coaching\/","title":{"rendered":"Mike Litzinger Resigns from Notre Dame, Retires from Coaching"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Mike Litzinger Resigns from Notre Dame, Retires from Coaching<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Notre Dame coach <strong>Mike Litzinger<\/strong> has resigned as the head coach of the Notre Dame swimming and diving program, the school <a href=\"https:\/\/und.com\/litzinger-no-longer-notre-dame-swimming-head-coach\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced in a cryptic statement Monday<\/a>. It added that, \u201cin doing so (Litzinger) has also announced his intention to retire from the sport of swimming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Litzinger was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/mike-litzinger-named-head-of-mens-and-womens-university-of-notre-dame-swim-programs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hired by Notre Dame in 2015<\/a> after a successful tenure at North Carolina. He coached the women\u2019s programs at St. Bonaventure from 1989-96 and the men\u2019s and women\u2019s teams at the University of Utah in 2000-07. He was hired by the University of North Carolina in 2007 and elevated to associate head coach of the Tar Heels in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaking changes in the leadership of one of our programs is never easy, especially at the start of the competitive season, but recent events convinced Mike and me that a change in the direction of our program was necessary,\u201d Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick said in the statement.<\/p>\n<p>The university also cancelled a dual meet schedule for this week in order to reorganize and \u201cdevelop an interim plan\u201d for the season.<\/p>\n<p>Associate head coach <strong>Aaron Bell<\/strong> is also no longer with Notre Dame. Diving coach <strong>Mark Bradshaw<\/strong> remains, and Notre Dame will search for a replacement.<\/p>\n<p>Litzinger was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/former-swimming-coach-sues-notre-dame-for-gender-discrimination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the subject of a lawsuit filed earlier this year<\/a> by former associate head coach <strong>April Jensen,<\/strong> alleging gender discrimination and the creation of an \u201cintolerable\u201d work environment by
